I think about that scene in Borat 2 where Rudy Giuliani clearly thinks the interview is really about sex and proceeds without a second thought about the camera. I also think about how he completely imploded his career, reputation, and maybe life by fighting a legal battle he knew had no merit (and maybe even deliberately sabotaged because, while he liked the sex, he might have actually had qualms about enabling a Trump coup… Like four seasons landscaping, seriously? And weirdly, it drives engagement anyway. People up vote where otherwise nothing would happen. Posters get reinforcement for posting something on Lemmy. And posts can be “hot” if your instance has that as an ordering filter causing more people to see it.
This is a good point worth considering. Indirectly can actually support in short term with engagement boost on post overall, but I’d still argue preserving that potential fire in someone (especially a young person), a thing that can be fragile and fleeting, is the more important win.
