How’s this for history repeating? The mainstream American media is botching its coverage of the Trump administration’s mounting military threats to Venezuela, and that failure is contributing to what looks to be a prolonged and violent disaster for both nations. Some experts inside Venezuela are warning that a U.S. armed effort at “regime change” could detonate years of brutal chaos there, much like Iraq in the years after the 2003 American invasion.

The media’s incompetence continues despite a major news event that should have instigated higher scrutiny and better reporting—the Nobel Committee has just honored the pro-democracy forces inside Venezuela by awarding the Peace Prize to one of its leaders, Maria Cortina Machado. This event, coming as it did inside a bubble of pure hype surrounding President Donald Trump’s doomed campaign to sway the Nobel Committee into handing him the award, should have been a flashing light alerting the press that a bigger story is already afoot in Venezuela.

It’s not certain that the message has gotten through. Meanwhile the media’s failures are stacking up.

Maria Cortina Machado dedicated the prize to Trump because she wants the US to intervene in Venezuela.

I would put the average American’s knowledge of the “situation in Venezuela” somewhere between diddly and squat. I’d say we can’t afford another war right now, but that’s never stopped us before, so who the fuck knows?

Additionally, the U.S. media is also not emphasizing sufficiently that fentanyl, which was responsible for three-quarters of the 105,000 overdose deaths in the U.S. in 2023—is not smuggled in from Venezuela at all. Fentanyl is easily the most dangerous of the illegal drugs, so Trump’s insinuations that Venezuela is hugely responsible for American deaths is a lie. The truth also should shatter the administration’s already dishonest justifications for murdering boatloads of Venezuelans on the high seas. Meanwhile, the economic crisis in Venezuela grinds on—and a U.S. invasion would add to the tragedy.

Mainstream media is complicit in enabling the narrative (or lack thereof) of economic oppression by the rich. This is just one example.

Bro. Nobody gives a shit about the justifications anymore. They’re just going to do what they want and we’re going to be forced to watch, Clockwork Orange style.

Liberals surrendered control of the country in 2017 and haven’t really looked back since. Fascists are in command, and if you protest too loudly, then you’re anti-Semitic anti-American Antifa.

I’ve been so discombobulated I didn’t even realize their excuse for murdering random boatloads of Venezuelans was Americans are dying from fentanyl. I knew it was some BS claim about drugs, but I didn’t know the claim was fentanyl and Venezuela doesn’t even have fentanyl.

They’re straight up murdering people for no reason other than to drag us into a war, and Americans are completely oblivious.

This is not, we sold another country weapons or supplies so they could do this. This is, we’re commiting war crimes with no way to deny accountability if we’re ever brought to the Hague, which is why we have to start hurting Americans that don’t support us in order to distract from the million other horrific things we’re doing.

Fuck being silent. It’s hard if not impossible to remember everything we’re supposed to be outraged about, but you can either go numb and check out, or you can add it to the ever growing list of unjust shit they’re doing to destroy your country.

You don’t have much control left at this point, but giving up and checking out vs getting more angry is still a choice. You don’t have to be outraged all the time (and you shouldn’t be for your own sake) but when you hear a piece of news like “they just murdered some more innocent civilians,” and your immediate response is “who cares?” your handing another piece of control to them.

When they threaten you with this unAmerican “Antifa” bullshit, their goal is to silence you with fear and make you more docile. For me it just makes me want to shout even louder out of spite.

They’re straight up murdering people for no reason other than to drag us into a war, and Americans are completely oblivious.

They’re not oblivious. National Media (particularly FOX’n’Friends) has been screaming about the Venezuelan Menace for years, if not decades. Whether its “Venezuelans Yearn For Freedom” interviews with dissidents or “Venezuelan warmongering threatens all of Latin America” neo-con bait or “Venezuelan Illegals Are Invading Our Borders” slop for the nativists, they’ve been pumping this bilge through every frequency.

This goes back to Trump 1 and “Obama turned us into Venezuela!” anti-health care reform / inflation hawkery reactionary populism.

We’ve just been whipping people up to the point that “Kill all the Venezuelans” is a mainstream talking point.

When they threaten you with this unAmerican “Antifa” bullshit, their goal is to silence you with fear and make you more docile.

Absolutely. And for anyone with something to lose, it tends to work. Just another edition of The Red Scare.

Wait . . Our corporate news? Those staunch defenders of truth? Those who bravely hold power to account?? Those people?

    Yeah sounds right. They suck.

Trump promised not to do another Iraq or Afghanistan. He never said anything about another Vietnam.

Hope all y’all are ready for War On Terror 2: Carribbean Boogaloo

The US Navy is going to keep gunning these people down until someone fights back. And that’ll be the causa belli they’re looking for in order to escalate further. Troops on the ground in Caracas by end of next year, folks. Just in time to whip people up for the mid-terms.

I can’t wait to see real bipartisanship return to DC, now that we’re getting ourselves into another Oil War.

Why would you ever expect the American media to report this issue accurately? Supporting endless oil wars is bipartisan in America. With the Gaza Genocide at a detente, they need a new meat grinder as an excuse to pump defense industry stocks full of more government money.
