Apple and Google use their app stores to shape what apps you can and cannot have on devices, but now more governments—including the U.S. government—are using legal and extralegal tools to lean on these gatekeepers in order to assert that same control. Google’s central registration system will be devastating for the Android developer community. EFF has signed on to F-Droid’s open letter. If you care about taking back control of tech, you should too.

    Big corps never really wanted people to be able to run their own software and have control over their devices. What they want is to sell appliances as opposed to general purpose computing devices.

        Secureboot does something or other I don’t understand, but it seems to restrict what you can install on your computer. And I’ve heard stories of BIOS software bricking itself when you turn off secure-boot.

          It’s not true, certainly can restrict the installing of certain apps which need admin privilegs, but it’s a malware scan beginning with the boot sector, avoiding root kit malware.
