Justices grill administration over imposition of steep duties as Sotomayor says: ‘I just don’t understand this argument’
The US supreme court appeared skeptical of the legal basis of the Trump administration’s sweeping global tariff regime on Wednesday after justices questioned the president’s authority to impose the levies.
Justices heard oral arguments on Wednesday morning on the legality of Donald Trump’s tariffs , a crucial legal test of his controversial economic strategy – and power.
Even conservative justices sounded doubtful of the strength of the Trump administration’s position. “The vehicle is the imposition of taxes on Americans, and that has always been a core power of Congress,” said Chief Justice John Roberts.
Even if the tariffs stop this moment, the prices are already up. They don’t go down.
Sure but at least I’ll be able to ship things in from Europe without it being fucking hyper inflated. I just want my swedish metal albums damnit.
Ha good point
They do if you force greedy ceo’s to put them back down.
When has this happened? Ever? Even United Health kept it’s prices up. It did start paying it’s share but the prices didn’t go down.
FDR was, as far as I know, the last president to use price controls.
Right, so not going back down
no one is going to do that in this administration though.
You sweetheart.
and then issued a 6-3 unsigned order affirming them, without opinion.

1 things is for sure: The money isn’t coming back to the consumer. If they have to return any funds it’s our taxes that are going up to pay for it.
We get shafted from both ends.
And it should be as clear as constitutional crystal that it wasn’t legal to begin with.
I mean, the money that was gathered is a tax, so returning all of it would be a wash.
For the government’s books, sure (if anything, it was a 0% interest loan, which is probably better than a wash strictly speaking)
But for society in general - the money was gathered from consumers but will be getting returned to businesses, so not a wash at all
Aww yeah. Expressed skepticism is just ten, or twenty steps away from a SLAM!
Imagine if SCOTUS stops MAGA from hurting itself in the midterms…
That’s what I was speculating. Clearly, SCOTUS can see that the tariffs are hurting America and especially Americans, so this is a backdoor way of taking the ball from Trump for his own good.
That, or they are sick of having to pay more for their morning coffee because Trump wants a better deal for his buddy Bolsonaro.
In that case the 5D move for the lib side of SCOTUS would be to vote for keeping his emergency tariff powers. 😆
Totally would be! Except the power of the National Cabal of Coffee Drinkers is the most powerful lobby in the country and you don’t want to end up in their crosshairs.
