Ah yes Murica , land of free speech and …fools ,
You know it was a bad idea when police departments started handing them out for free
As was always the plan. As we gave up trying to tell everyone fifteen years ago.
So it was your fault
You don’t say, first I’ve heard of it🤔
This is why I a.) live out in the countryside, and b.) replaced my dad’s old Ring cameras with eufy security cameras.
eufy doesn’t require a subscription service (although you can get one if you want to trust their cloud service). If you buy a HomeBase, you can store all your security footage locally on a small box. Easy to hide and/or grab if you need to get out.
Sure, there’s a security risk of storing data locally. But I trust myself to protect video recordings of my property over some company’s cloud service. Ring complies with police when asked for your video footage, and they don’t even notify owners most of the time. Cops could be looking through your video feed without your knowledge, which is a nightmare if you have cameras inside the house.
And now, apparently, so can your neighbors. Fuck Ring.
For the curious:
Eufy is based in China, has already had at least one scandal for lying about data exfiltration, and (when I investigated last year) could remotely update their systems with new behavior at any time. I do not recommend their products where privacy is desired.
Good to know. I’m always on the lookout for a better, more secure option. eufy is my best option at the moment, but if you (or anyone here) knows a better choice for home security systems, I’m all ears.
Honestly refreshing to see such a civil back and forth about data privacy that didn’t devolve into give me convenience or give me death/what do I have to hide?
Reolink seems pretty good.
I have a Eufy system too. If anyone is curious, they did have controversy before because enabling thumbnails on notifications temporarily stored them in their cloud. They’ve since made it clear in their app settings they will do that if you choose to enable it. I just disabled thumbnails and set it to text-only for all notifications.
I love that their new commercial is basically the same tactic that child abductors use to capture kids.
“Hey Billy, don’t you want to be a neighborhood hero? Don’t you want to help find my lost dog? Just
hop in the back of my vanattach this camera to your house and we’ll save all the doggies in no time at all!”another example of the brilliance of Bezos’ cutthroat capitalist brain!!! /s
They don’t have Rings in the sewers, right? Free underground, secure tunnels.
Or you get an RC car rigged with a GoPro and paintball gun and get really good aiming.
