Ukrainian president says Brasília-Beijing initiative shows “lack of respect” toward Kyiv’s position.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Brazil of being pro-Russia in the Kremlin’s war on Ukraine and lambasted a joint peace proposal drawn up by Brasília and Beijing.

“The Chinese-Brazilian proposal is also destructive, it’s just a political statement,” Zelenskyy said during an interview with Brazilian news site Metrópoles on Wednesday evening.

Brazil and China signed a joint statement in May calling for peace talks involving both Russia and Ukraine. However, according to the Ukrainian president, the two countries consulted Moscow but not Kyiv.

“We are not stupid,” Zelenskyy said during the interview. “How can you offer ‘here is our initiative’ without asking anything from us?” He added, “This is a lack of respect toward Ukraine.”

As a Brazilian, I’d rather have Ukraine than Russia in BRICS. Of course EU is certainly more attractive.

For sure! Until recently I didn’t even know it has become some sort of official thing, I always thought that it was just an observation by economists that these 5 countries in particular were “ahead” of the other “developing” countries.

The disrespect from Russia and China aside, I am.optimistic that attempts at peace talks are coming in.

The peace talks are DOA for the reasons stated quite clearly in the article. And frankly, this should surprise absolutely nobody. The proposals were demonstrably not serious, nor made in good faith - again, for reasons stated quite clearly in the article.

Yes, that would be the “Disrepect from Russia and China” I acknowledged which comprises one third of my entire comment.

Still a step up from the situation months ago where neither side wanted any sort of resolution other than taking everything in reach. (Namely the aggressor Russia, now begging for resolution).

You don’t ask the loser what they want to stop the war. You go to the side that’s winning and say, “what would it take to get you to stop?”. Either Zelensky is a fool or he’s so posturing for more western money, because he has really no leverage and so his insistence on continuing the war is costing hundreds of thousands of lives. Support domestically for the war has collapsed, tens of thousands have fled the country, tens of thousands more dodge the draft. Everyone willing to fight in this war has already done so, they’re literally arresting people for draft dodging and telling them go to prison or join the military and we’ll absolve you of the “crime” of not wanting to fight a losing war. Is this just a collapse in western understanding of war after so long without a major one? Or is it just selfishness on the part of the west who cares more about “hurting Russia” than it does about irradiating Ukraine and destroying an entire generation of people? Or is it just idiocy on the part of Ukrainian leadership, who keep getting removed for not wanting to continue sending their men to die?

The last time Ukraine was under Russian rule there was a literal genocide, so their backs are kind of against the wall, any peace with Russia is just a re-armament period until the next invasion.

Ukraine needs to be allowed to go weapons free in Russia proper, destroy their air defenses, then start hitting refineries and other high value targets throughout Russia and especially near Moscow. Then, peace talks can be productive.

Well… yeah. Brazil’s the B in BRICS and Russia’s the R, so Brazil is officially pro-Russia.

And by the bye - China’s the C.

Just because I found it’s interesting and tangentialy related, here’s a bunch of statistics on the BRICS States by the German federal office of statistics.

      https://www.destatis.de/DE/Themen/Laender-Regionen/Internationales/Thema/allgemeines-regionales/BRICS/_inhalt.html

Auto-translate should work. The statistic on CO₂ Emissions might be slightly unfair, as I assume a lot of that is directly, or indirectly related to production for G7 countries.

BRICS is more about resisting european hegemony to establish a new hegemony than anything. As a unit, sometimes they’ll say something real as hell, but generally speaking 90% of what they do is the same evil backstabbing shit we always talk about the US doing to influence global economics and sustain power. When BRICS is taken into consideration with the G-7 what we actually see is a two party system of global torture that more than anything wants to maintain the basic status quo, they just want to shift slightly who’s on top

Lula doesn’t seem quite as straightforwardly pro-Russia as Bolsanaro was, but its very clear their economic association with Russia makes them unable to truly be neutral arbiters of the situation, no matter how much Lula wants to present Brazil as attempting to be neutral.

Lula doesn’t seem quite as straightforwardly pro-Russia as Bolsanaro was,

        He’s even more pro-Russian…

"Lula argued in early April that Ukraine should consider ceding the Crimean Peninsula to negotiate peace with Russia, saying that “Zelensky cannot want it all.” "

That’s right, Ukraine should not want their whole country, they should stop being ‘selfish’ and give in to Lula’s benefactors demands… He’s a flog.
