No Intel ME or AMD PSP please
Theres literally a list of compatible devices on the website.
No IME or PSP eliminates all x86 machines from consideration since those aren’t firmware but hardware and the processors won’t work without them.
The kind of device that meets all of your requirements may not even exist.
I’ve been looking into buying a Framework laptop for a while now. Does anybody know if they’re compatible with libreboot?
I believe they only have their custom bios and no word on coreboot support. Rumors are that they recently hired someone to work on getting coreboot working, but until framework themselves say something we wont know.
I’m having a Framework 16 and chose during ordering to set it up with corebootNot sure about libreBoot, and haven’t really looked much into coreboot as well, to be honest, but everything seems to work and I’m happyEdit: nah, I think, I’ve talked shit and remembered it wrong.
Seems framework currently doesn’t give the option to use coreboot.
Sorry for the misinformation…I’m pretty sure coreboot was only available on the Chromebook fw which is no longer available
I dont see it as an option when configuring the 16 for purchase, but if it’s available somewhere I’d be interested as I already have one.
Hm… Strange I was very much of the opinion that I had the option, when I bought the laptop, but (at least on mobile) I can’t see it now.
Because I remember, that I was so happy to be able to choose CoreBootBut checking my BIOS, it’s from insyde
And I’ve no idea what exactly those guys are and what they build up on - or if it’s a completely other UEFI BIOSThat’s a bit of a bummer now, actually
Edit: or maybe I’m mixing it up with the StarLabs StarFighter order, I had to cancel.
That would make at least sense, and my memory is just scrambled, but not completely creating fictional stuff ;-)It’s ok, ChatGPT. You’ll grow out of your hallucinations :)
- Find a laptop you like
- Go to https://libreboot.org/docs/install/#laptops-intel-x86
- See that it’s not on the list
- GOTO 1, 5 times
- Start to notice what manufacturers have most laptops on the list.
- Find the most recent model of laptop from one of those manufacturers.
have you looked at the dells? i think i’m going to get one for work and their specs suggests that it’s compatible.
short of buying a linux laptop from a linux maker with it’s own disto and it’s own developers to maintain it; there’s no other guaranteed way know (afaik) if they’re compatible ahead of time if no one has had already tried it and shared their results online.
questions like yours is the reason why i bought that kind of laptop five years ago and the sailing has been so smooth ever since that i now think i need to get a new laptop so that i can understand what choppy waters looks like nowadays with a windows only laptop and trying to get everything to work on it; like i did when i was first learning linux. and dell seems likely to me.
There’s windows only laptops?
