I refuse to watch cable news, don’t have regular tv, and not a fan of visual media for news anyways. I would love something like a Lemmy/reddit mega thread where I can refresh and get up to the minute updates, but from professional news/journalists. But without the faux drama reality tv stuff that the cable news networks always do. I also love podcasts so if there’s a listening medium that isn’t overly dramatic that works too. Any suggestions?

You could follow the #RSS feed of something like The Guardian online news…Hasan Poker ain’t for everyone but he’s super knowledgeable and provides great context for ongoing issues. I mainly watch on YouTube so the clips are edited down and even more context (charts, sources, etc) are added.
Just drink alcohol in the basement alone and check the internet in a week.
In January… 2029
Probably europe or Australia. Though I know some people who have no complaints about doing it in Thailand
Your state likely has a web page designated for election results, so you could get information straight from the source for everything you voted for in your state and see which way your state goes for the presidential election. Your county website may also have a page to show whether any propositions were accepted or rejected.
I’m not sure about a better source to see where all 50 states’ results are reported. Maybe Balllotpedia has something that updates. I’m not sure the federal government would have something because the official results won’t happen until January 6 when a joint session of Congress reads and counts the votes from the Electoral College (who doesn’t vote until December 17).
fetal position in the bathtub, lights off, noize cancelling headphones playing static
Glad to see that other people are doing the same thing as me
That profile pic is amazing

A little too literal, but I like your style, lol
Pink noise sounds soothing.
don’t forget the bottle of cheap booze
The Philip DeFranco Show on YouTube.
Local news usually have a webpage or a YouTube channel keeping track of stuff too.
Stay offline entirely, and read the result in a printed newspaper the next day
I’m sorry to inform you, but Burgerland is not technologically advanced enough to tally the results in a day.
It’ll be more than a day. Expect a week and be pleasantly surprised by 5 days.
For just the results. Decision Desk HQ gets updated quickly, as they provide data to media outlets and others. I don’t think they require a subscription just for results. The AP does the same and generally “calls” states anyway. (As in, the networks will call the results when the AP does, though some have extra requirements like their own data team agreeing.)
Open your neobroker app, if Trump won, the market will crash before it made the news.
Depending on which bit of the market you look at I suspect it could also go up.
Jane Street Capital lost like $100m 8 years ago assuming this would happen and it didn’t.
Yeah looks like the wallstreet is looking forward for deregulations. Haha
all of our media is controlled by capitalists so i plan on going with organizations that have had a reliable history within the last decade or so; like democracynow or npr.
NPR is state media, and who runs the state? The capitalist class.
very true and if it weren’t for the tireless efforts of their journalists i would have classified it as the same category as the others.
i think that the best you can do under the overwhelming circumstances in my country is to try and i think that they are trying despite their own biases manifesting themselves from time to time and their perpetual funding dance with partners like the imperial gov’t and the american oligarchs.
Is it bad that I get most of my non-local news from foreign sources? I do look at the AP and NPR but I usually go to the BBC or Reuters first and I almost always check the CSM for international stories I want more information on.
i don’t think that they’re much different, if at all.
The BBC and Reuters have both gone way, way downhill in recent years, but the concept is reasonably valid. AP and NPR are still good. Aljazeera is actually pretty decent for US news, though I’m not sure if that’s true for US news related to the middle east.
I think Al Jazeera is good for news related to the middle east - Al Jazeera has an Arab bias, the same way US news has a US/Israel bias. When there’s a conflict between US/Israel and the Arabs, I tend to be more sympathetic to the Arabs, so I prefer their news. Somebody with politics different from mine would disagree.
Plus they sometimes put out absolute fire like this: https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2024/9/11/debate-in-nuclear-armed-former-colony-fails-to-reassure-global-community
Reuters, BBC are fine, AP as well. Al Jazeera is good too. Always be aware of the media biases, nevertheless. Look how they frame and write.
Do they say:
[ethnic thing] arrested and stopped by Police…
or do they say:
Police murders person…and;
Trump victim of woke witchhunt / Harris loyal to Israel
or:
“The elections have started.”
i plan to just find out when someone on lemmy mentions it in passing
Not so much plan to as resigned to 😅
lol yeah I'm really having trouble finding any information about this it's a real blackout
My less facetious answer is Wikipedia
Maybe good ol newspapers or eventually check if the federal government has an official result page
The federal government doesn’t run the elections so you’d have to check the 51 Secretary of State (or equivalent) sites to actually get live results.
