It’s obviously an appeal to the dumbasses that react to any restraint on anything almost exactly like a wayward child being told to put on their seat belt…it’s really the gist of the conservative movement and always has been, regardless of the intellectual window-dressing put on it over the years.

Speaking of Christmas, these are also the same dumbasses that thought someone was keeping them from saying Merry Christmas prior to diaper donvict getting in there, and seriously thought that Happy Holidays was some Grand Globalist Conspiracy vs. the shorthand it’s always been. Not everyone feels like saying Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, it’s a lot of words and it’s not about oppressing the poor marginalized xtians. 🤣

Paper straws do get mushy all the time, even if you don’t slobber all over them.

On the other hand, they have a much less severe microplastics problem and I think my brain and balls are running out of room for microplastics.

When a turtle chokes on a plastic straw, it will float to the surface, beach itself, and you can strap it to the roof of your car and drive it to your cottage where your family can feast on it for days.

Maybe you’re one of those families that buys mostly straws. The ones you see with little children huddled and sobbing around their parent who is desperately trying to hold back tears while explaining, “we can only afford 13 bags of straws this week instead of 36 because woke took away our plastic straws. And while duck calls will work just fine with biodegradable straws, they don’t have the same mouth-feel as the ones that choke sea turtles.”

certain states banned them. this would federally make it illegal to ban them at the state level, as far as I understand. you know, states’ rights and all

Nah, a cursory glance at the article shows it’s about reversing a push by the Biden administration to transition federal locations to using paper straws.

Last summer, the Biden administration announced an initiative to reduce single-use plastics in federal operations.

In addition to working with the private sector, other stakeholders, and state, local, Tribal, and Territorial governments to reduce the impact of plastic pollution, it planned to phase out federal procurement of single-use plastics from food service operations, events, and packaging by 2027, and from all federal operations by 2035.

As a non American, maybe someone can help clarify something.

My understanding is that executive orders only apply to federal agencies. So does this just mean that cafeterias in federal office buildings will need to use plastic straws? And restaurants / stores are completely unaffected by this?

Half sarcastic. This ranks as one of the least harmful things he’s ever done, by far. Mostly because everything else he does is so fucking harmful.

But also, since we’re on the subject: plastic straws don’t have a significant impact on the environment. I’m not saying plastic isn’t bad for the environment, but straws are a rounding error. A single pair of sneakers introduces more plastic into the environment than a lifetime of straws.

The crusade against plastic straws has always been pure virtue signaling. It pisses some people off, makes some people feel good about themselves, and has no measurable impact on the environment.

What Trump is doing is the opposite of virtue signaling. Vice signaling, I guess. But compared to the Gitmo concentration camps, it almost feels like I’m reading good news.

IMO we need to ban plastic from anything that can be easily replaced without plastic. Even though it may be a rounding error, it’s something that should be simple to say no to and to correct.

When they come up with a good replacement for plastic straws, definitely. Again, I’m not in any way trying to say plastic isn’t bad for the environment.

Both paper and plastic straws contain PFAS, which is unbelievably harmful to your health and the environment. The good alternative is to get a metal straw.

Even with the liners, they are biodegradable or burnable and can be sourced from renewable timber. You could also use recyclable aluminum cups like the ones Ball sells.

I’m half expecting his next executive order to be that all ocean cleanup efforts must immediately cease and that in fact dumping in the ocean is now mandatory and anyone caught trying to dispose of trash sustainably will be jailed.

Seriously, it’s gone long past the point where anyone has the slightest excuse of supporting this orange painted clown in his blonde wig and comically oversized tie without just looking like evil pieces of shit.

It’s like he’s actively making his way through a list of anything actually good that society has managed to achieve in the last few decades and dismantling it. I mean, we all hate cardboard straws but this clearly isn’t about straws.

The guy seems to literally want to see smog fill the air and plastic fill the oceans. While simultaneously making sure that everyone is as fucking miserable as possible in terms of both human rights and economy. So what the fuck is anyone’s excuse for supporting this? I don’t believe that there is anything a Trump supporter could tell me now that would convince me that they’re not just evil, cruel, profoundly stupid, walking talking pieces of shit.
