Please go to Apple Maps and harass them mecilessly
Honestly - this is from a playbook used by every autocratic administration: “Take the attention away from the more important things”. Seen it in EU constantly: Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, etc. So sure, report it, but be aware this is a charade.
Didn’t get your reference to Hungary etc. Do you mean they are annoying but don’t really matter in the overall scheme, or that similar tactics are used there?
Its about tactics - countries with autocratic leaders usually employ similar tactics where they e.g.
- make a big change to some segment of law (more/less important - but has to be something that hits everyone or doesn’t make sense), so the media reports on that, then make changes to it again (due to public pressure), so that media and population gets these topics in waves, just so they make everyone blind to their corruption games they play in the background,
- or they use some politician from their party/coalition to stir the pot in their ministry they lead by playing drama queens by accusing the opposition of corruption,
- or they leave a “less important” political role to a crazy person, they do stupid shit that takes years to fix and you essentially have constant drama and info taking away everyones attention from the important stuff.
- etc etc
But you get the point - calling it Gulf of America essentially gives you free patriotic bonus points from your followers and also makes your opposition / people invest in something that is, in the end, total waste of time (time which could be used for something else, like educating these populist/autocratic/however you call it tactics to everyone, so that your average Joe doesn’t get fooled by it so easily).
yup. at this point the bullshit coming out of trump’s mouth is the least concerning thing in this admin. the heavy lifting is done by the heritage foundation and doge
It is the main thing Trump is good at:
Creating some drama/infuriation to keep news noisy in order to hide his fascist dictator playbook moves
The stunlock continues
I just sent one in to Google Maps. Clearly it must be a bug. No such place exists
A waste of our time for sure, but I did it as well.
Yeah, the company that donated one million dollar to a mfer that promised nothing but fascism is not fascist…
Also, reporting that Trump Tower (either) should be renamed Mexico Tower feels pretty good.
Google disabled reports and editing for it.
There is a better chance that user reporting for this will be disabled more so than it is that this would make a difference. You know that right?
If this latest drama with Apple Maps (and Google Maps) is what pushes someone over the edge to looking for more user respecting options then the people further gone than I would really be comfortable getting used to. Both companies regularly do much more than should do more to turn you off.
I’m going to start calling it the United States of America of Mexico and sometimes Canada.
I use Naziland
I’m going to start using that one thank you.
The full name of Mexico is “Mexican United States”. Not joking.
United States of Amerixco
Mexico Jr.
Wrote App Store review, then deleted maps. Installed Organic Maps to replace.

I’ve been struggling without public transportation in Organic. It kinda works? Like it shows the path but doesn’t actually show the stops or station names
Unfortunately, the reality is that OSM (what Organic Maps gets its data from) is volunteer-run, and most likely nobody’s gotten to the bus stops near you yet. The GOOD news is that OSM is easily editable with something like Street Complete on Android, Open Stop on either iOS or Android, or from the comfort of your home on https://www.openstreetmap.org/ . There’s other apps too, like EveryDoor and GoMap!! for iOS and Mac. If there’s something missing, please feel free to add it, and get in touch with others in your area to help contribute! I’ve done my own share of updating outdated places, adding new locations, and annotating stuff like street lighting, street surfaces, and so on.
This is the way.
is there an easy way to export all my map markers from google to organic? I’ve saved a lot of locations over the years.
hmm I wondered this too. I have a ton of starred places as well as some custom lists. I wasn’t able to find anything to do it, but would also be interested in this.

alternate name for this article: “How to feel good about yourself while doing something that doesn’t help anything at all”
I’m in Europe, here it displays «Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)»
I can’t understand would it even have the part in parentheses in Europe. Think how silly it would look if every location had the regional name for every nearby country added in parentheses after the primary global name. It would be a mess.
Eg:
Germany (Deutschland, Allemagne, Niemcy, Germania, Saksa, <etc>)
Feels to me like special rules Apple has to stroke special fascist egos.
But maybe its not Apple and this is a name set by your local governance. You mind if I ask what country Apple maps you’re looking at?
Hi, I’m in France but sorry my comment was for Google Maps, not Apple maps, my bad!
Shout out to the menial workers at Apple Maps who are going to have a crap day at work tomorrow because of the thing their boss made them do, so they don’t get fired and replaced by someone else who would do it.
That’s why they made Apple intelligence so minded numbingly stupid. Job security. If it were capable Apple management would have replaced everyone.
The linux part is cringe. Just move if you don’t want to use apple’s os
Done ✅
Now let’s use this opportunity to find some FOSS options like Organic Maps
If you want to go even further, you can grab StreetComplete and have fun wandering your neighborhood while contributing to OpenStreetMap by answering questions for things like business hours, road widths, road materials, etc. Unfortunately, it seems to be android only at the moment and I’m not sure if there’s an iOS alternative.
I never understood StreetComplete
as i understand it, there’s tons and thousands of datasets available about public infrastructure, but for some bizarre reason, StreetComplete asks us to fill in that information by hand? How stupid is that? only to make a ton of errors while manually copying in that information.
Meant to reply earlier, sorry. I assume that it waits for several inputs to verify. I have completed some streets in my area and there’s no changes as of yet. I think its more of a hobby thing. I like going around, getting out of the house and getting some fresh air while having a goal. Things like Pokemon Go just didn’t do it for me. I can easily see my tiny town not having much in the way of public infrastructure data, tbh.
I do understand where you’re coming from. If its just not your cup of tea, it does seem silly.
As far as I know the edits are applied immediately in the backend, however the rendering of the changes can take some days.
Oh strange. I’ll have to check my account. There may be some verification steps I missed, because I know you have to do something to confirm that your edits are trustworthy.
I just checked how it is for me to be sure. My Streetcomplete changes show up immediately on openstreetmap.org/edit.
I commented on apples map, too. Organic Maps for me!
it’s what I use, but it has such a unpleasant UI
I feel like Signal is the only FOSS App that has a good and modern UI
I’m trying magic earth this weekend.
