I still find the phrase “declare an onside kick” weird. Now you can’t use it as a trick play. That was the fun part.
100% this. The element of surprise was the most important part of success on that kind of play.
It’s like having to declare a punt fake.
Kinda defeats the purpose if the receiving team can just stack 10 guys 10 yards from the kicker before it starts.
