EDIT: I’m drawn to the look and size of a French Bulldog, but I’m not attached to the purebred label and I don’t want to support unethical breeding practices. I’d genuinely love to adopt a rescue; ideally a small, affectionate dog that physically resembles a Frenchie and gets along well with other pets. That said, I recently contacted someone on Facebook ABOUT THEIR frenchie puppy post, who is asking $2,500–$4,000 for French Bulldog puppies with no papers, no health certifications, and no proof of lineage. That struck me as an exorbitant price, and I came here hoping to get a more objective understanding of what costs are typical, especially when there’s no documentation involved. I’m just trying to understand the landscape, not stir up debate. If anyone has practical insight on price ranges, breed alternatives, or rescue options that might fit what I’m looking for, I’d sincerely appreciate it.
I don’t know about adoption - I’d guess about $1k. But please be prepared for the cost of pet ownership. Wellness health (exam, vaccines, preventatives) will cost from $500 to $1k per year. To prepare for emergency health issues, set aside $1k to $3k per year (FYI: some common emergencies cost way more than this). Then there’s food, toys, supplies, grooming, cleaning, etc. And if you have to get a pet-sitter or leave them at a kennel, you might be looking at $50+ per day.
I hope you can afford to do it. Dogs are wonderful.
I’m very familiar with pet ownership. I have both cats and dogs, and have had them for years. I know you are coming from a caring place with your comment though, and it’s great advice. I just never have paid for a purebred before, and I thought this person’s prices were really high.
Please consider the health issues that many purebreds face before you buy one! Mixed breeds are usually way healthier and happier.
Health Issues: French Bulldogs are prone to various health problems related to their short snouts, including respiratory distress, overheating, and other complications. Quality of Life: Many French Bulldogs experience chronic pain or discomfort due to their conformation.
Where do you live? There is going to be a huge difference depending on country.
I live in Maine. The dogs are in NH.
Don’t waste your $$ on a purebred. Period.
