For more than 30 years, the UN General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to end the U.S. embargo on Cuba. “It’s a dishonest talking point meant to deny the real human impact of the embargo,” says Professor William LeoGrande.
But this year, the number grew slightly: seven countries voted NO, and a few more abstained.
According to LeoGrande, most of those opposing nations either rely heavily on Washington, like Israel and Ukraine, or have conservative governments ideologically opposed to Cuba.
Others are nations clashing with Russia, viewing Cuba as its ally. Behind the numbers lies U.S. diplomatic pressure. Washington can force votes, LeoGrande says, but not genuine support.
