I feel like some of these videos are people just riding the hate train? Nintendo has always done this. Everyone agrees it’s a stupid practice. In Nintendo’s eyes their content is always about the software and not the physical aspect of it. The value of their IP never goes down, so they never lower it.

Until the Switch, popular first party releases received price cuts via Player’s Choice and Nintendo Selects re-releases. Getting rid of that, hiking Nintendo Switch 2 console and game prices, and pushing their Nintendo Switch Online subscription are all signs of increased greed on Nintendo’s part.

nintendo has always been shit in some ways, but super mario bros 3 and super mario world were around the same age when the wii released as both mario galaxies are now.

you could get those games on the wii eshop for like 5-10$ each

even with inflation, that’s a far cry from what nintendo charges now

They really should keep older released games at a lower price. The only time I think the argument for a justifiable price is in a case like Ocarina of Time DS, where they remade the game. Most of the time that isn’t the case.

It used to be a lot better. For the SNES they made a collection of all super Mario games (literally all up to that point) as a single game for the SNES “Super Mario All Stars +”.

I think the biggest issue with the Mario galaxy bundle, is they had released the “3D All stars collection” a couple years back (which got flack for not containing Super Mario Galaxy 2). So if you bought that game, you now have to pay $70 ($100 CAD) just for Galaxy 2 (Making the re-release of the game more expensive than the original).

with the fairness that nintendo doesn’t deserve, you can also buy the games separately

so if you don’t want to pay 100$ for two old games, you can also pay 55$ for one old game 🥲👍

Just for fun I ran the Mario 3 release price through the Bureau of Labor and Statistics inflation calculator and it came back with $127 today for what 50 bucks was worth in 1990.

I’m not saying $100 for Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 is good and correct but I will say I always find people wanking on about game prices to be a bit short sighted. Gamers are the most spoiled price point consumers on the planet.

im not talking about the original 1990 release tho, im talking about the 5$ 2007 rerelease on the wii

          that’s 8$ today

you see how the value of “15 year old game” increased a bit, huh!

and sure, mario galaxy is a game with much more content than super mario bros 3, that’s not super fair. but it has about the same content as super mario 64, and that was 10$ on the wii. that’s 15-16$ now.

and also, both galaxy games were rereleased on the wii u for 20$ each around 2016… so. there’s that too.

in the grand scheme of things, the price of video games increasing doesn’t matter much when compared to housing or food, but that doesn’t make it any less ridiculous that nintendo’s charging that much for old games

Agreed. I think they should have different pricing structures. There isn’t much real new effort going into placing old games onto new carts.

And you’re saying that’s not a reason to hate Nintendo and their shitty practices? You even agree that its a shitty practice. Why shouldn’t they get hate and shat on for this very reason?

People can hate Nintendo. It’s mostly the disproportionate hate lemmy gives to nintendo, compared to microsoft and sony, who I believe are worse. If people are going to hate, at least balance it.

I feel like some of these videos are people just riding the hate train?

The guy in this video at least saw a chance for some engagement on his video by taking advantage of the fact that people didn’t know he was in Canada to make the price look inflated.
