“Nuts!” was the legendary one-word reply from Brig. Gen. Anthony McAuliffe on December 22, 1944, rejecting a German ultimatum to surrender during the Battle of the Bulge. Acting commander of the 101st Airborne at Bastogne, he used the expression as a polite substitute for “go to hell” when refusing to surrender.
