Only one working sewer gas destructor lamp remains in London; however, due to a traffic accident, the original lamp was damaged and has been replaced with a replica.
That accident must’ve been a fragrant scene
This lamp is currently in use and can be found burning day and night down the side street of the Savoy Hotel in London. The story of this lamp has given rise to locals referring to Carting Lane as ‘Farting Lane’.
Heh.
According to the wiki it didn’t actually get rid of the smells, it just pulled them to above pedestrian height so people couldn’t smell them as much.
Vents that extend above pedestrian height are still in use: https://spacing.ca/magazine/section/infrastructure-fetish/raising-the-stink/
Clever!
Better is to collect them and burn in a generator to make electricity when the sun is down and the wind isn’t blowing. However that is also a lot more complex
