I’m trying to learn French, so I’m looking for places to get media I can watch and read. Bonus points if there are kids’ books and TV shows – I’m at an absolute beginner level here.
The fediverse community is !tipiak@anarchist.nexus
Tipiak is a kinda slang way of saying pirate. It comes from an old tv ad from a food company named Tipiak. 3 old grandma screamed “pirate !” after discovering that the food tastes the same as their own secret family recipe (supposedly). It became sort of a meme and is used to say pirate. As the French language is not difficult enough for our English neighbours, we started to conjugate the word: Ce soir je vais tipiaker ce film (tonight I’m going to pirate (download) that film).
The same word is used in the answer from @obercail@jlai.lu with even a new variant: Tipiakeries (pirate thingy)
The two main French torrents tracker (private tracker) are:
- https://www.yggtorrent.org/ (domain tld change regularly)
- https://la-cale.space/ (recently created after bad decision by ygg, and growing)
look out for @YggTorrent@mamot.fr the main french torrent website
It’s been a very long time since I’ve needed it so I don’t know its standing in trustworthiness anymore but I was always decently successful with good ol’ Cpasbien
There is a shitload of movies/TV shows on www.zone-telechargement.irish/. The site might be inaccessible depending on where you live because of french justice’s DNS block orders. Just enable DNS over HTTPS in your browser to restore access.
Get “TrueFrench” versions for metropolitan French (Paris), and “VF” versions for Canadian’s French (Québec). If you are not at all familiar with French, I suggest you watch the TrueFrench versions, which use a French accent that is probably easier to understand to French speaking people around the globe
I have a FHYM like link if you want : https://rfrancepirate.github.io/WikiTipiak/tipiakeries/
You can try captvty on desktop, it enables downloading available replay and many have English, French audio with subtitles in each languages.
Only thing is I don’t know it if requires to be in France to access it but vpn would solve that.
If you go on any French download website mentioned in fhym, look for files with “multi” so you will get subtitles in English.
Dreaming Spanish was a fantastic resource for starting to learn Spanish. It looks like someone did a similar concept for French, although I can’t vouch for it.

Looks like you may be able to find some Fort Boyard eps on archive as well: https://archive.org/details/FortBoyardFrance2201707152100
