Legislation that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote was only the beginning as the G.O.P. presses to sharply limit voting in line with President Trump’s false claims of widespread fraud.

The strict voter identification measure that Republicans have pushed through the House is just their opening salvo in a broader legislative effort aimed at keeping control of Congress this fall and helping to amplify the president’s false claims of mass voter fraud in the event that they lose.

The G.O.P.’s relentless focus on the bill and an even more restrictive measure making its way through the House — both of which face a steep uphill path to becoming law — is aimed chiefly at intensifying pressure within their own ranks to muscle through new voting restrictions and seek to reshape the electorate in their favor.

But it also allows Republicans to hammer President Trump’s falsehoods about widespread illegal voting particularly by undocumented immigrants, helping them build a case, however groundless, that any Democratic victories in November will be a result of cheating.

It’s my understanding that only a birth certificate or passport will be accepted.

Considering a LOT of conservative women change their name when getting married, and a LOT of conservatives don’t have a passport, while many non democrats don’t change their name as much and are more likely to travel abroad… wouldnt this be a self own?

So do a lot of liberal women. Liberal women probably are more likely to keep their maiden name, but I’m sure most liberal women observe the custom of taking their husband’s name.

The point of this is to prevent WOMEN from voting, broadly. Regardless of party affiliation. Many women who are registered Republican and have conservative husbands secretly vote for the Democrats, at least some of the time. I personally know a few right-leaning women who hate Trump, even though their husbands continue to support him.

It’s extremely charitable of you to assume that these laws will be enforced equitably.

You just know they are going to enforce the requirement just like the family guy skin pigments meme, only going to profile people too dark or brown. Wouldn’t be surprised in the weeks before the election they have polling places are going to word of mouth that they won’t be checking IDs just so they can gotcha the non-whites when they show up to vote.

It’s weird for them to restrict those without passports, that’s their base. On average people who have passports lean left.

I’m not sure they’ve thought their cunning plan through here because their bubbles are composed of people who have passports.

Oh, that isn’t a problem. I’m sure ICE will walk people to the voting booths personally and point out the correct answers. Of course, failure to ace the test despite some generous assistance from ICE means you’ll be beaten into a coma.

Luckily states control how elections are run so that’s currently just fear mongering.

However, acknowledging your concern, only about 50% of Americans even own a passport Source. While this article says only 9% don’t have direct access to their proof of citizenship, I suspect that percentage is overstated.
