This should terrify every single corporation that does business in the US.

The US government has now declared that any company that holds a government contract either does so on the government’s terms, or never ever gets to do business with the US government again.

They’re claiming the power to write their own contracts and force you to sign them, under duress. Congrats billionaires, this is what you paid for.

I mean, Anthropic is valued at checks $380 billion and brought in $14 billion in revenue last year. End of the day, $200 million in federal contracts isn’t going to swing the needle that much.

This doesn’t mean that what Trump is doing is reasonable, but unless there’s more at risk, I don’t think that I’d lose that much sleep over it.

The company cited safety concerns as the reason for refusing to lift restrictions.

They don’t want to take on the liability. You know the gov would throw the company under the bus if it fucked up in a catastrophic way. And not only financial and legal liability, but also damage to their reputation.

Managing risk is critical to any business.

I don’t think it’s liability. Whole bunch of companies helped the Nazis and came out with their reputation intact afterwards.

I think they’re afraid of helping people that might threaten their money.

Well, what’s in the contract? If use of AI for military purposes wasn’t in there or even explicitly forbidden they’re not losing shit.

Those government contracts are generally loss leaders for AI companies. The rates they get per token are horrendous. They eat shit every time some clerk tells Claude to draft an email for them.

Anthropic basically only have these contracts because the image of being a major government supplier is good marketing. They’re reasoning that the PR hit from being seen as making “kill bots” will be a lot worse for them marketing wise.
