As opposed to The Seven Samurai in the wild west.
Someone should remake Battle Beyond the Stars, but as a story from feudal Japan.
I skimmed the wikipedia articles for both hard and soft scifi, specifically the representative works sections. Both list Jack Vance’s The Languages of Pao. And that pretty much covers my inability to differentiate between hard and soft and par-boiled, stir-fried, fluffy sci-fi.
