A civil rights leader in Illinois is facing calls to resign after referring to migrants as “savages” during a Zoom meeting.

NAACP Illinois State Conference President Teresa Haley was recorded in a virtual meeting calling migrants “savages” and claiming they are “raping people” in a video that was released by former DuPage County NAACP President Patrick Watson on Tuesday.

Haley made the comments to argue that Black residents enduring homelessness are not given the same aid as migrants during a Oct. 26 Zoom meeting.

“Black people have been on the streets forever and ever,” Haley says. "And nobody cares, because they say that we’re drug addicts, we’ve got mental health issues.”

She continued: “But these immigrants who come over here, they’ve been raping people, they’ve been breaking into homes,” she continues. "They’re like savages as well! They don’t speak the language and they look at us like we’re crazy.”

Apologised for being a Republican puppet? I mean, regurgitating Republican talking points is pretty disappointing for anyone, let alone an American minority, let alone a president of the NAACP. 🤦

Is she? I couldn’t find her affiliation (Wiki and some news articles about her). Bizarre she came out with such ridiculous stereotypes knowing that she’s associated with the NAACP.

One thing I’ve come to realize is most people who who disparage others are simply directing eyes away from themselves. Projecting. Casting illusions, and what I mean isn’t necessarily what they’re saying is or isn’t true (though often it is maybe a truth or half-truth), it’s simply meant to cast the illusion that they are somehow “better” than they actually are.

I’m trying to fathom at how much better off we’d be , collectively speaking, if people who do this would spend a little time going within and figuring out how to be a bit better today than they were, yesterday, instead of trying to figure out how to look better, externally.

I hope that makes sense. I need a nap.

        Edited for capitalization and autocorrect.

It’s not very helpful to deny the lived experiences of poor black peeps my dude. Don’t use republicans as a shield to ignore problems real people are having.

There are legitimate problems in NY and Chicago due to migrants, particularly in black communities. Pretending she’s a puppet for echoing what people have told them is kind of questionable.

There are legitimate problems in NY and Chicago due to people who were born and raised here, too. The problem is blaming it on a whole group of people due to their ethnicity. It’s just as racist to say that migrants are “savages” and “rapists”, as it is to say that African Americans are “gangbangers”.

This is what gets me. Here I am, calling out specifically that, and this smoothbrain comes in, basically supporting her and that exact propaganda. “IT’S NOT PROPAGANDA, IT’S REAL”. No, you muppet, it isn’t.

Thanks. More people need to yell at racist xenophobes. This behaviour isn’t acceptable.

The migrants aren’t the fucking problem. The cities making choices that pit minority neighborhoods against migrants for resources are a problem.

But no, it’s republican propaganda to want to listen to voices that have historically been ignored. Christ you’re all insane.

You keep focusing on the wrong part.

It’s Republican propaganda to blame migrants. She’s blaming migrants.

It’s Republican SOP to get minorities to fight each other. She’s played right into their hands.

But you’re right. Migrants aren’t the problem. Now tell her that.

There are a lot of problems. That doesn’t mean we can’t focus on multiple issues? Is it surprising at all that city leaders are making choices that negatively impact minority neighborhoods?

I’m an open borders type. I think immigration is a net bonus.

Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realise that it was all those immigrants breaking into people’s houses and raping them which is why black people are poor.

Fuck off with your Republican bullshit. Fuck right off and never come back. Go fuck off to some shithole country as you people like to call them.

She did, and you’re arguing with someone saying she’s wrong, meaning you agree with her.

Pick a side. You keep saying “migrants are good” and “this crazy woman who hates migrants while saying Republican speaking points is right and we need to listen to her”

No. Fuck her racist bs. And if you didn’t read that right, I’ll bold the important part.

              Fuck her racist bullshit.

I’m arguing that she can have flawed opinions and valid complaints. If she’d said something about white people I doubt anyone would bat an eye - criticism of that would be characterized as tone policing

There is room to dislike racist ideas while understanding and having compassion for the issues that are at the root of those ideas.

How does one have AI speak for you in a zoom meeting?

      It seems worth the risk…
