As a grouchy old sci-fi nerd, can anyone explain why they think transhumanism is bad? Some Googling just leads to people claiming that it’s ‘anthropocentric’ - as if you can’t improve your body AND also care for nature at the same time.

Hey, McDonalds, I got a general AI that can understand human speech.
It’s located between my neck and the top of my head, and it costs $25/hr for fuel consumption.
Your ‘argument against GMOs’ is an argument against seed patents, not GMOs. That’s the same as saying there’s an ‘argument against insulin’ because big companies own the patents and charge lots of money. The product is absolutely irrelevant to the conversation.
Yes, this looks much better. My other thought would be road-rail buses, but getting on/off the tracks might be too much work to be worth the extra flexibility.
That looks horrible. Cramped, the giant windows means it’s hot and the sun is always in your eyes… Any reason they need to only use one rail? We already have road & rail buses, trucks, etc…just use those.
I second that idea. ‘Once while sober and once while drunk’ and all that.
Honestly, yah.
See how much they want it when they have to start paying tariffs to ship their potatoes into the US.
It strikes me that this could be quite useful when used proactively.
E.g. - Player Character Byrnwolf just got a crit on the Bandit Lord with his Greataxe. Queue the GM: “How comfortable would everybody be with a description of Byrnwolf splitting this guy in half?” All the players tap red, yellow, or green in response, and the GM can moderate from there.
It would be good at providing ongoing feedback for the GM to guide their style over time.
Whoops. Should not use social media when tired, I glossed right over that.
Probably circumcision
I love the idea of the danger just being…plants. Invasive species? Although it’s really the humans that are invasive. Sure, there’s a BBEG to defeat, but the problem is much more n existential one of, “The climate is changing and we’ll lose our home and livelihoods” rather than, ‘evil monster over there’.
Please just do automated trams.
It’s not about what somebody’s ancestor did. It’s about what the country as a whole did. Country X had Y policy that oppressed Z group, and has resulted in that group still being impoverished today? Country X is on the hook then. They caused the problem, they need to help clean it up.
It unironically is.
Posts like the above are why I’m a communist now.
Megamind. Just Megamind. The Incredibles is good, but Megamind is first class.
This is the best part of a TTRPG.
Are we counting raising kids? Because I feel like that would be the answer for the supermajority of people. It’s super necessary work that society is utterly dependent on, yet we insist on not compensating.
Shit, we could just do UBI for parents and we’d be 80% there.
Mass Effect 2 and 3 are up there with some of the best shooters I’ve played. It’s just so smooth. And the weight/CDR system is incredibly simple yet impactful. I’ve played through 3 several times. Yes, the story beats weren’t always great. Still fun.
EDIT: Since we’re posting favorite builds: Sentinel gang. What’s that, I have access to literally everything you need to beat any enemy? Yes please.
Stop. Using. Cars.
I get your concern (this is the first time I’m hearing about it and oof). I would however point out that the core of transhumanism is the idea that we should have the freedom to modify our own bodies however we want. This is how I’ve always heard it used and how I’m going to keep using it.
I do understand where those people are coming from, though. If you have the technology to e.g. eliminate sickle cell anemia and choose not to do it, that’s as much eugenics as choosing to do so. I don’t know how to square that with individual liberty. Having parents decide is…not necessarily a great solution. Having society decide is also not a good solution, but probably the one we’ll have to end up doing.
