Since she’s going to prison, where her mental health will not be treated appropriately for the horrible things done to her by the person she murdered, I disagree, the sentencing is not fine.

I do agree that the “justice system” failed at every other step along the way. I just think it failed here too. She should be sentenced and appropriately confined, but not in prison.

I just avoid most people. But with two young kids, yes, we are lucky. Not a single case of covid in our household.

Probably doesn’t hurt that we are all vaccinated, remind our kids to wash every time they come inside from playing, do most play with others outside (playground, bike ridesz etc), and I work from home about 95% of the time.

My polling station is great, I’m in and out in 15 minutes. I work from home, and in the past when I didn’t, I just used mail in voting.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have those options.

I’ve just said this recently (like earlier today), but its not necessarily apathy.

Many people had to work multiple jobs, couldn’t get a vote by mail option, their local polling place had too few voting booths relative to the number of voters, etc, etc.

As soon as mail in voting became accessible, the number of voters actually voting jumped massively.

Preventing access to voting is an international act, and dismissing people as just being apathetic for not having the time to wait a few hours to vote (because kids, work, etc) is part of that intention.

Don’t just be dismissive. Support a national holiday for election day. Support politicians who want to keep mail in voting for all. And don’t look down on people who are put into situations where voting instead of showing up to work could make them lose their jobs.

One thing there that shouldn’t be discounted is how hard it was for folks working multiple jobs, who have to take care of their kids, etc to be able to get to a voting booth.

Long lines, inaccessible mail in voting, and so on have long been issues especially for the lower income bracket where they aren’t getting the option to work from home that day, or live in an area where there are so many booths that the line takes 10 minutes to get through.

So I wouldn’t say its all “stupid” people who don’t vote. These were intentional decisions made by others trying to limit access to voting, and in the past, it worked. The moment mail in voting became ubiquitous, there was a massive increase in voters.

Pushing for keeping options open for everyone to vote, including making it a federal holiday, consistently available mail in voting, ensuring access to sufficient booths, etc, is of utmost importance.

It was pretty obvious to me, but I guess I’m not a good litmus test.

Yup, all visible. The only exceptions are fully private instances (or mostly private, with limited federation) and local only communities.

kbin/mbin also make all these votes public, so you could even just be on an mbin server and see all the votes. So right now its like… jumping over an 8" high hurdle. Or doing the limbo under a pole at 5’. You have to do something, just not much. I wouldn’t call it completely non-trivial to do, but it isn’t rocket surgery either.

Votes, however, are visible across any instance. I agree its a transparency issue. Right now I think a of of folks believe their votes to be anonymous (or only visible to their instance admins at most), but that’s not true at all.

Anyone can stand up an instance though. So its available for anyone to look at right now.

I absolutely agree that its a problem. The problem is there is nothing stopping companies/governments from doing that now, and I don’t know if its feasible to make them actually private on Lemmy.

Right now, they aren’t private, you just need a few extra steps to see it all.

Ok, so had to mention while looking at some game stuff to install… I remembered that I have a gog account, grabbed lutris, and boy is Quest for Glory 1 entertaining on this! QFG2-5 installed as well, unfortunately the touchscreen doesn’t work great in that mode. Solaar + a spare logitech mouse and off to play… Going to have to grab my steam controller when I get up. I think a stupid fun classic game/emulation station is what this is going to be! (At least until I decide to do something else)

While I agree its not ideal to have everything be public, given it functionally already is, this just makes it easier for users to see. Right now its a minor hurdle, but still a hurdle - but your votes are not really private/anonymous to start with.

Agreed - lets be honest, Lenovo put zero thought into this. Its just a tiny with a screen basically glued to the top, and tons of poorly managed cables coming out of the back. You could technically get away with just the power cord on it since it has wifi, but its kind of nonsensical that way. I could build a battery pack, but… meh.

Small arcade is definitely a fun idea though, something I could stick in the living room. Since it has two video outs as well, I could set it up to take over the TV or just be a standalone as the mood strikes.
