ICE is short for “Immigration and Customs Enforcement”.

The next part is even phrased worse.

Anti-Muslim hate-rally would be a better phrasing, but “hate rally” is a weird phrase already. A good editor would have dropped “hate” from the phrase entirely.

So, rephrased: “a pro-ICE and Anti-Muslim rally”

It’s saying the rally was in favor of ICE and opposed to immigration and Muslims.

Don’t besmirch the good name of pussies like that.

I’m not shocked.

Minnesotans have the highest voter turnout, have the second hours per capita of volunteers, has a rich history of immigration, and in general neighborhoods, churches, and other ‘third places’ are both welcoming and tight knit.

Hell there was a massive “socialist” co-op movement here in the 70s and 80s that had a huge and lasting impression on our politics.

Even our conservatives in the past tended to be the ‘libertarian’ type of conservatives, though of course the national circus has been having an influence since around 2015.

But even to this day polls show that identity politics don’t play as well in Minnesota as they appear to on the national stage. People don’t care about what happens in your home (perhaps to a fault), but if you visibly contribute to the community even in a small way (shoveling snow for or with a neighbor is the very true trope), you become one of us.

The massive protests following George Floyd’s death proved that Minnesota is a place where normal people will take real political action when they are pushed.

All this in mind, I think ICE was always going to fail here. But the death of Renee Nicole Good has dumped gasoline onto the fire and is turning what would have been a quiet failure they would have just stopped talking about nationally into an explosive situation.

I don’t know where this ends. I don’t want Minnesota to bleed any more then it already has, but I know we will stand firm.

It’s the same damn statistic every time. 60% people horrified, 30% cheering, 10% cheering while making a good show of wringing their hands.

First past the post, education politicization, political disenfranchisement, and gerrymandering have created millions of monsters. I only hope democracies abroad take this as their wakeup call to fix the broken systems creating the global hard right movement.

What requires a larger logical leap: that everything is random and quantum states can propagate instantaneously across any distance regardless of the speed of light and without any theoretical mechanism beyond math, or that time is an illusion and the universe has hidden non-local variables?

No idea how particle physicists can sleep at night just accepting the Copenhagen Hypothesis because the math works and it says not to worry about how.

I think you underestimate the bubble many of these people have built for themselves to insulate themselves from inconvenient truths.

My kitten was the same. She was just a ball of energy, always wanted to run and play, and assumed if you were trying to touch her it was in play.

One day I pinned her to the ground and started petting her. Totally blew her little 7 week old mind, she has been desperate for pets and the most affectionate lovey-dovey cat I’ve ever seen ever since.
