I’ve really enjoyed greyjay. I don’t yet have creators I follow outside of YouTube, but I love the concept.
unfortunately a lot of the bigger alternatives are just filled with right wing nutters. although hopefully apps like grayjay will make it easier for less political minded people find a home on other platforms

I’m already using SmartTube on my tv and Tubular’s parent app NewPipe on my phone and now I finally have it set up so all links to YouTube addresses on my phone open in NewPipe so that I don’t get this bullshit again 😁

Odysee and Rumble are the platforms that wackjobs (like flat earthers) have flocked to in the past year or so.
Those platforms aren’t promoting that content per se, it’s just that such content isn’t moderated like on YouTube and Facebook. And before you say “but there’s tons of that stuff on YouTube and Facebook already!” it doesn’t compare.

If I understand correctly, I think I side with the people saying use it anyway. Video hosting is hard, and YouTube is more enshittified every day.

Yup! I was already using NewPipe for finding YouTube videos myself, but this is what spurred me on to find out how to also open every YouTube link i click in NewPipe 😁

This is all I get for the last week or so, no matter which video I try to open. I was about to delete the app for that. How is yours still working?
PipePipe from f-droid is a clone that seems to update more frequently than newpipe, and has the additional benefit of being able to access the Chinese and Japanese video sites bilibili and niconico (worth checking out, it’s fascinating even for someone who doesn’t speak the languages)
Far as I can tell, that’s the one I get when opening in Firefox and then switching to desktop mode.
Everything except geo-blocked vids works perfectly now that I have NewPipe set as the default app for all YouTube links, though, are you sure yours is updated?
I use the same setup as you, opening all YouTube links in the app. I just checked again, I have the latest fdroid version which is 3 weeks old and the issue persists, also did a reinstall for good measure.
I also have the tubular fork installed from the latest apk, and it has the exact same issue.
I also tried from different locations via VPN but nothing helps :/

You might need to update. Occasionally Google changes how YouTube works which requires NewPipe to change. You can get the latest version faster by adding the newpipe repository to fdroid. https://newpipe.net/FAQ/tutorials/install-add-fdroid-repo/
Have you updated recently? A few weeks ago there were some changes to YouTube that basically shut down newpipe and other similar clients, but an update should have fixed that.

So this caused me to go digging as I’ve run into the same issue. Make sure it’s up to date first obviously, and if it still refuses to function, their page has fixes which ended working for me:

This is why I’ve always been confused about people telling me to use an ad-blocker. How tf does that help with the app?
