Fat Bear Week, a celebration of brown bears’ survival instincts, brought a grisly reminder of the animals’ predatory nature on Monday, when a male bear, 469, killed a female, 402, at Katmai National Park & Preserve in Alaska.
The unsettling scene was captured by a popular live webcam that follows the bears on the Brooks River.
In a statement sent to NPR, the park said, “National parks like Katmai protect not only the wonders of nature, but also the harsh realities. Each bear seen on the webcams is competing with others to survive.”
you made me doubt but:
they are naming them numbers
I thought it was their weight.
On first reading I breezed right past that, going “Sure, they’re telling me the weights of the bears.”
Some of them also have names. Chunk, Grazer, Otis, etc. Usually just the more popular or well-known bears though. 747 doesn’t have a name though, because his number is an apt description.
If you couldn’t tell, I’m very into Fat Bear Week - my office posts our brackets and we have a trophy for the winner.
What industry are you in that there is professional interest in Fat Bear Week?
Oh it’s not professional, we just all like animals and most of my coworkers already play fantasy football, so this fits in.
Someone brings it up once and others like the idea. It’s no different than how March Madness took over offices 20 years ago.
How do you give the bear their trophy?
How does a bear win?
Last one living
Very carefully.
… Is there a fat bear week community on Lemmy? Can we do this? Is there enough interest to do this?
One of my workplaces likes fantasy football, so I’ve learned to play for free beer, however, this sounds wayyyy better.
