I have people arguing the US is as bad (or worse) than China on human rights and freedoms. The US is going the wrong way, but China has been there for decades. People get so upset about injustices under capitalism and liberal democracy that they misjudge the scale of horror under alternative economic and political systems.

As terrible as the Trump administration is, China is still worse. Think freedom of speech is under threat and reduced in the US? Go to China and criticize Xi publicly. Think the Republicans are rigging Congressional races with gerrymandering? Try one party rule. Worried that you could be disappeared and show up in a prison hundreds of miles away or in another country altogether? How about just disappearing forever?

Meanwhile, I’d caution people that there is propaganda and misinformation coming from both sides (no, both sides aren’t equal). It’s the Fediverse where I learned that all of the living hostages held by Hamas as of two weeks ago were soldiers captured in Gaza or on military bases in Israel. Yet when released, an AP story only listed one as a soldier and described how others were captured in their homes going about their daily lives on October 7.
Let’s try to spread information on the Fediverse, not bunkum we expect is true because it makes sense in our worldview.
As we can see, Biden (and we can assume also his would-be successor Harris) was just another Democrat beholden to corporate interests. He used Lina Khan to further the appearance of caring about consumers and working on their behalf.

Is the way you judge what’s wealthy to look at your own situation and target something comfortably above that? There’s plenty of people who will surmise that your situation is comfortably better than theirs once that power is available to the public.
Learning about macroeconomics is conceding that capitalism is anything but a sham. When our side takes over the economy and controls wages and prices, we won’t need to understand macroeconomics. We’ll just forbid things from going awry.
