Thank you Spez for banning my account of nine years for voicing my political opinion! I made many contributions to communities over the years and now you’ve lost that so good fucking bye.

And just think, you guys were the ones who didn’t leave back when it was going down the shitter because you disagreed with the opinions of the people they were banning.

This isn’t even exactly a haven for wrongthink either. /r/fatpeoplehate couldn’t exist on Lemmy, so most people coming over aren’t even really concerned with political opinions being silenced, so much as they care about their particular political opinion being silenced.

It absolutely could exist. It’s just likely that a lot of servers would defederate them. That’s kind of the beauty of federation.

Well there ya go. Turns out the fediverse isn’t about freedom from corporations - and it’s just about creating your own brand of filter bubble.

Turns out, those are sort of the same thing. You are given the power to shape your feed how you want it instead of how some corporation wants it.

Yes, but federation controls that on a wider level by adjusting what you’re allowed to see and interact with. Therefore, someone above you gets to control that still. That’s the point I’m making.

If everything federated by default, and users could sign up for filter lists or something to make it easy - sure. But that’s not how it works.

Lemmy even did the same thing Reddit is doing now, where if you mentioned a certain topic they were banning people; but they walked it back. I believe it was even the same topic of Luigi and “advocating violence”.

Therefore, someone above you gets to control that still.

There is nothing stopping you from running your own Lemmy instance and choosing to federate with whomever you choose.

Lemmy even did the same thing Reddit is doing now

Which Lemmy instance? If you don’t like it, just join a different one.

This is all the beauty of not only federation, but also open source.

It really depends. World is friends with pretty much everyone with a few notable exceptions. There are definitely instances that care about that, but you can’t force an isolationist instance to communicate with you.

Freedom goes both ways. It also means freedom to form a bubble.

Reddit has turned into a complete shithole the past two years. The sooner it gets taken out back and bludgeoned to death, the better.

Personally, I don’t trust anyone who hasn’t been banned at least once from that place.

I went 13 years without being banned, even though I spent most of my time on there debating politics and religion which frequently got heated and had never even been temp-banned from a subreddit. Now I’ve been banned 4 times in the last year for total bullshit, 2 of which happened yesterday, so things have definitely gone downhill.

I use this it doesn’t work. In the sense that, to you your post may seem gone. But Reddit can and will restore them.

I use this exact tool when I left Reddit. They restored my posts.

It’s not just that. The comment history doesn’t go back further than 1000 posts. They are still there when you find an old or saved thread somehow. But the power delete suite uses the comment history and will miss a lot of older comments from a simpler time.

    Nice permanent ban!

I left for much less; A 24-hour suspension. Though to be honest, that was literally just the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I got suspended for using the word “retard” in a scientifically and non-offensive context (ex: put bread in the fridge to retard the growth of mold). No way to appeal that obviously retar-- ridiculous decision.

Honestly, I shouldn’t still be pissed about my ban but I can’t help it.

I was on reddit for over 10 years with millions of fake internet points

Sitewide banned me for no discernable reason

It’s been a couple of months and they still haven’t even bothered to respond to my appeal

Now that I see how reddit’s going down the tube, I don’t even care if they respond at this point

    I’m done with it

When the account is banned is still possible to edit or delete own comments or posts?

Consider running that script that goes over each post or comment and replace it with random words, just to poison their ai training

Considering deleting my account as a statement but I’m kind of attached to the history which is why it’s kind of scary touching it at all at this point. All I’m using it for now is for a few crafting subreddits and some clothing based subreddits that don’t have equivalents on Lemmy yet. One I might be able to create myself. But we’re talking 5-10 of my most frequent hangouts. That seems like a bit much.

I had a 15 yr old account with thousands of comments. After a 3 day ban for a dumb joke about Boeing Starliner (that became partially true BTW) I deleted my top comments and closed my account. It’s better not constantly doing scrolling, but I haven’t left social media completely obviously.

That’s the reason I haven’t deleted my reddit aswell, I have some niche subreddits that mean the world to me and made me expand my hobby. I am however going to use lemmy more and who knows, reddit might become worse and we fully go to lemmy anyway!
