Back in the zeroes, when MTV was still a respectable tv station, they aired a japanese horror movie every friday night. I used to love it, but can’t remember any titles. Now my daughter wants to watch horror movies, so I want to introduce her to the japanese movies. I’m sure Lemmy can recommend some good titles?
I loved Cure (1997). Did a double feature with this an Longlegs. Great night.
I haven’t seen it, but Onibaba (1964) has a good reputation. Willem Dafoe recently recommended it as one of his Criterion Closet Picks.
What is “criterion closet picks”? Looks like it’s a phenomenon that I should know.
Directors and actors go into a closet filled wall to wall with DVDs, pick out some favourites and tell us why those fillms are important to them. Their choices are generally not what you’d see on some stereotyical “best movies ever” list (though certain directors like Kurosawa often get a mention) so it’s quite interesting.
Pulse (Kairo)
One Missed Call The Japanese version, not the terrible American version.
Ah yes, this was one that stuck with me
- Ju-on
- Ringu
- Premonition
- Dark Water
- Memento Mori
- Suicide Club
- Uzumaki
- Whispering Corridors
Bonus Korean horror:
- I Saw the Devil
I Saw the Devil
I saw this as part of my university film club back in the day and we had a break afterwards before the next film. Everyone was so shocked that there was barely any discussion, just stunned silence lol
Audition is great because the buildup and hints along the way mean the ending doesn’t come completely out of left field.
Oh cool this is one of the Miikr films. I haven’t watched, but I own it somehow.
Audition was one of the only films I had to stop watching part way through. I eventually revisited it, but damn it was fucked up.
Pulse.
Ichi the Killer, and Battle Royale are always big standouts for me
I don’t think Battle Royale is a horror. It always felt more like an action/thriller to me.
House (1977)
Nope 😆
I love horror and this was suggested to me. What a colossal waste of time.
