Gruesome video shows a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee getting stabbed to death on a Charlotte light rail train – a case that has turned into a flashpoint as the Trump administration vows to crack down on crime in large, predominantly Democratic cities.
I haven’t seen this posted anywhere else on lemmy for some reason.
Crying “mental health” is a distraction from the disparity in wealth. It’s patronizing and ineffective. The vast majority of people forced into mental health care see it as a joke and a punishment, just like rehab.
People are miserable and lost because the only paths that seem available to them are serving for peanuts or taking advantage of others.
We need to start looking in different directions and valuing different things if we want these problems to be solved.
You’re right in some ways, but also people with schizophrenia need help whether they want it or not. They are, by nature of brain chemistry, incredibly prone to interpret it as conspiracy or government overreach, but if they don’t have these issues under control they’re at risk of hurting people or being hurt themselves.
Schizophrenia isn’t a “the world was shit and I didn’t have hope so I went crazy” disease. It’s a combination of biological predisposition and a trigger that can be anything from drugs to stress and in this man’s case seems to have been a prison sentence. It’s why people with a predisposition to Schizophrenia should avoid cannabis and psychedelics.
I don’t like locking up the mentally ill. As someone disabled I’m acutely aware of how badly disabled people are sometimes treated by the system, and given that I have loved ones and relatives who’ve been committed for and against their wills, I want very much for commitment to be less awful and only when necessary, but sometimes it is necessary and I’d like it to happen before people get hurt

The vast majority of people forced into rehab may view it as a joke and a punishment, but it still gets them sobered up.
Ask me how I know.
