This feels like a comic about invisible disability.
I feel a little more seen now.
It is. Note the tail.
So thayvwould make him a… mertaur? minutemaid?
At least the brother didn’t turn out like poor Blort
I love that she has a tail in the last panel. Call it the “stinger” of the joke. (Sorry don’t hate me)
Oh my god I didn’t even notice it. So she wasn’t even lying at the start about being a ‘monster’. She still has a quirk and the dude was even more fucking offensive than initially thought.
That’s fantastic. Thanks for pointing that out!
When she said she was a monster I thought she was going to be a Karen looking for support lol
i thought it wouldve just been about humans being monsters in general
Same!
A wheelchair cranked by a merfolk tail could be at least as fast as a bicycle. Big missed opportunity.
And if the minotaur strength still applies? Put enough gears on that bitch and he’s outpacing a 5e Aarakocra hasted and dash flying (I may have pissed off my DM a couple times).
Okay thats fucking hysterical and annoyed I’ve never seen that until now…
I have a big birdboi that I love more than anything in any fictional world. He’s my rock. He somehow has survived in a game for 4-5 years now, longer than I’ve been on Lemmy, and I genuinely didn’t think I’d ever be able to play one dude for so long. However there was one specific thing I was thinking of.
One of the PCs named Lori had feelings for another PC named Renn. But Lori also had backstory shit going on so she wanted to run off and deal with the backstory alone, like a fucking idiot. What I was unaware of and what she had not put to the party or players was that she was changing our her character temporarily. So when Nevermore, the giant black feathered aarakocra with a very on the nose name because I like to make myself laugh, noticed that she was gone only about an hour later, he took the fuck off. Haste wasn’t involved but something else was that I can’t remember what specifically it was. Either a magical item or some class fuckery due to multiclassing. Either way he managed to catch up to her relatively fast, much to the DMs frustration. I then told her off and had a whole thing trying to convince her to come back. She then made a compelling argument while sending me a message going “THIS WAS PLANNED LET ME LEAVE! I LOVE YOU BUT AAAA” and I had to have Nev back off.
I never really use his flight stuff because as a DM myself I know how annoying it can be. I said to my DM that I’d only ever really take it to the absolute limits if there was someone in danger because it fit with the character anyway and he had no issue with that. Nev only ever busted out that level of flight (usually limiting myself to the same 30 as everyone else) about 3 times and one of those times was under DM control.
I would’ve expected Nevermore to be a kenku, but unless you really plan out your sentences kenku don’t have any unique mechanics, but aarakocra do. It’s kind of a shame, to be honest. I’ve been playing a kenku recently, and I’m not planning out my sentences or anything, but I do have an unconscious tendency to mimic people’s style of speaking, so I at least have that going for me.
The art came first before any concept of anything. It was a giant black aarakocra that looked vaguely like a raven, had a glaive and various tribal imagery on the body and my jokey dumbfuck ass went “Nevermore!” which made my DM roll his eyes. All in Voice Chat. Not as hard as when he asked where he was from and I said “The Colony” and he started to spell it that way before I said “No no. Like the CAWWW-lony!” It really wasn’t anymore than that on the planning. When asked why he was a barbarian it was because his husband had died. I had so little connection to anything in the game because I was there for the inception but a meta-gaming asshole frustrated me enough that I left instead of causing shit. When the DM kicked the metagamer out he asked me back because he figured out why I had left. So I started playing this Nevermore guy instead but felt out of place with everyone.
After a few months of playing together and travelling, his behavior was wildly inconsistent and it felt weird so I sat down with the DM and we cleaned up his backstory. Added in far more stuff but expanding on the jokey shit. A lot of the gags that he had made or random comments were solidified and expanded far further upon. Also retuned him from full barbarian to echo knight fighter/storm barbarian. So much so that when Nevermore briefly left the party for a couple of months and I was playing a character called T’vok T’kuvma (shut up), the party went into a bizarre emotional free fall for a little bit. T’vok was built as a therapist character so the timing felt appropriate but still. I was actually retiring Nevermore but after a while some random thought occurred to me how I could get him back and I got so fucking excited. Started talking to another player in the game and he said ask the DM and I did. He loved it too.
Blind siding nearly everyone, Nevermore came back a couple months later with an entirely new setup. Now he had a new class with his other classes shifted around. Now he’s a Vengeance Paladin, Echo Knight Fighter and Barbarian and fuck me is he scary. He’s not wearing any armor and has a 22 AC. Luckily, my DM ain’t a bitch and routinely throws things into the game that will toss Nev around like its nothing. Boy saw a challenge and made for a fucking excellent game. He’s not on lemmy, I know he’ll never see this, but he’s genuinely the best DM I’ve ever had the pleasure to play for. I love the man so much. He’s a great friend who has allowed me to play with some other great friends for a very, very long period of time. So long that I even got art commissioned for. Refining the look of the original aarakocra into what he is now. Sorry this ended up being longer than I expected but I love Nevermore… he has been a consistent thing throughout a long period of turmoil and confusion. I rely on him. Maybe one day I’ll get some more art done of him, maybe of the group too. But as it stands I’ve only ever been in a position where I was able to afford it once. If you’re curious, here’s the original art that the concept was based off of and the art I had commissioned.
Long live Nevermore <3 Long live The Firestarters. PS… Nevermore speaks with a weird blend of a Bostonian and Brooklyn accent because what better suits a barbarian?
Note: The commission, second image, was done by Useless Elf! Want to give her a shoutout and some credit for doing a great job.
My character (who is called Korppimmies) has a similarly vague background. His backstory is in broad strokes, but I keep accidentally adding more lore because of my poor choice of words.
The original backstory is that he comes from an isolated tribe which periodically exiles young adults whenever it reaches a maximum capacity. These young adults are then supposed to wander around and found their own tribes in different places. My guy never got past the wandering part and eventually reached “civilization.” After a series of foibles and arrests, Korppimmies became paranoid and started wearing a plague doctor’s outfit, as it is otherwise very difficult to hide the fact that you have a beak.
Anyway, he’s barely got any skills in healing, but went from town to town as a travelling doctor until The Party™ recruited him to help fight a dragon.
Unfortunately, Korppimmies was too smart for the sake of the campaign, and trapped the BBEG in the astral plane way before we were supposed to defeat him, and the campaign is pretty much over now.
Oh that’s fucking fantastic. Especially the plague doctors outfit hiding an actual beak. I’m kind of jealous I never thought of that. The campaign being over aint that big a deal but hey… just means the DM can always take an unexpected turn. Have a beach episode and break him out or something. Who knows lol
The mimicry feature takes a bit of creativity, but remember you can use it on non-word noises! I’ve borrowed a dragon’s roar to create panic, replayed a conversation I heard earlier word-for-word to earn someone’s trust, and replayed the bard’s music to give them a backing band for a performance. However the two extra proficiencies are probably the more useful thing; not a flashy feature, but definitely a useful one
The Bulls jersey is another nice touch!
This is just like when everyone thought Dragon Rider and Drone Rights were faking their genders
[incomprehensible]
ok i heard of dragon rider, but who is drone rights
Context?
That’s really it. People thought they were being made fun of because the genders were too weird
Oh ok so those are irl ppl?
