When all peaceful and passive options have been completely exhausted. Sometimes when words fall under deaf ears, it becomes harder to ignore a nice slap upside the head.

When nonviolence will result in more suffering
It’s quite often a viable solution. It’s rarely an ethical one.
when it’s the last resort to self defense. at that point, it’s not only the only viable solution, but the morally obligated one.
Don’t start fights, but finish them.
Walk softly and carry a big stick.
When people who won’t listen to reason are using violence to silence or exterminate others, violence should be used to eliminate them instead.
