Native American here: we have been trying and failing for 400 years now and could really use some help from everyone.

Out of curiosity, if you’re visibly non-white:

Have you ever been told to “get out of our country” or anything like that? Think I’ve seen articles about racist people telling Native Americans to gtfo a long time ago, but no idea how prevalent this kind of idiocy is or if it was just ragebait, as I’m not American myself.

Yep I get told that all the time. I’m 42 and am born and raised in my town and I’ve been told by older white men who are not from here to leave here or got to a bar/casino and drink myself to death. I’ve even been told to watch my back because the president is gonna allow “Indian” killings again.

I’m sorry that you and yours have had to put up with that kind of stuff for so long. When I was a kid I really believed that we’d have gotten over all of this racist bullshit by now, but I was always a little too starry-eyed for my own good.

Agreed I always thought that real true hatred and racism was a thing of the past. But the older I got the more I see it right in my face most of the time.

At this rate that wouldn’t even shock me. The president bit I mean.

With the Trump admin flat out saying that they’re entitled to any piece of land and any resources they want because of military strength, you can kinda see how “we were here long before you” is once again not enough to justify your existence to the fascists.

I hope it doesn’t come to that and that you’re safe. Can’t imagine what it must feel like to be seen as an outsider in the land your ancestors have been living on since time immemorial.

European here. Why are there Americans that hate Natives? Maybe I’m missing something, but I’ve never heard of natives terrorizing US, being the group of controversies, or anything else that could be used for hate. In fact, everything I’ve heard about Native Americans make me assume they’re chill and interesting to hang out with

EDIT: I forgot about racists, but outside of racism - is there anything I’m missing?

I think it is just flat out racism. As an example I have a coworker who is only 2 years older than me and he and his wife absolutely HATES Native Americans. Every opportunity he has to make sure to tell me that the whites “rightfully” took this land because my ancestors were to unruly and didn’t believe in god. And that we willingly gave them everything and now natives are mad at losing everything.

Some days eugenics seems sensible. Your coworker and his wife should not be allowed to raise children.

Funny thing about karma, they have been trying for 20+ years and they are unable to have kids. They have spend thousands of dollars on all medical procedures to get pregnant and none have worked.

Some times, on a small scale, karma really does seem to exist. I’m watching it happen in real life with two of the worst people I know. My incredibly abusive ex, who can no longer afford to pay her rent because she’s too lazy to go back to work and instead has been on sick leave for a bone fracture in her hand for 4 months because her doctor is willing to extend sick leaves indefinitely (government in my country will pay for sick leave up to 6 months per year), and her abusive new boyfriend, who can’t hold down a job and doesn’t pay his debts so now it’s entirely likely that his car, literally the only thing either of them owns that’s worth anything (and the reason she got together with him in the first place - she only looks at guys cars), will be taken away by the bailiff to help cover said debts.

Both people who have so far survived off lying, stealing and abusing. Now together, and neither can get the other to support them. Neither has anywhere else to go either, it seems. Poetic justice.

I’m white and I caught that shit almost 20 years ago because I was in an ESL program (despite English being my native tongue) because I moved to the states from Italy. Mind you I lived in USA before that and am natural born citizen, just father was stationed in Italy so I lived there for 3 years. Moved to USA in time for 2nd grade so had never been in an American school system yet. Mother is an immigrant sure but they didn’t even know that, just saw me in the “Mexican kids class” and struggling with reading and spelling so I was one of “them”. Mind you I’m talking about early elementary school, so kids just parroting and learning what their parents say at home. I can only imagine what darker skin people have to deal with from racist pricks raising racist children.

oh i see that, i had a NAVAJO professor in college once, he was a very angry person in general and he stated it stems from that same “Decimation of 400 years” and would express towards the students making him somewhat ineffective instructor.

A full on economic embargo on the US would be a nice push, but the EU is too damn dependent (and swerving to the right as of late).

Well if the US full-on turns on its NATO allies, it’s no longer out of the question.

Will be the end of the EU auto industry for sure, I think some other industries can cope better.

What is crazy is this was actually a huge problem for frontier settlements. Tonnes of people would meet the indigenous population, be exposed to their society, learn enough of their language to communicate, and then go “fuck this” to all the European culture and just move in with the locals. They brought whatever skills they had including metalworking and so on and joined up and for the most part it went really really well for them, until the westerners came and killed everyone. Behind The Bastards had a great episode a few years ago about it, through the lens of one particular bastard, and yeah, faced with a culture where individuals were not exploited for every last shilling of value to the shareholders people wanted out.

Yeah you guys got a really shit deal, and the really unforgivable part is that you’re still getting more shit deals even today. I’m a descendant of the colonizers, but I’m willing to help get rid of any of the ones who perpetuate these shit deals and don’t think you guys absolutely deserve to be in charge around here. I mean, I’ll go too, if you want, but I’m just putting it out there that I’d also be delighted to try to learn from and live in a society run by potentially actually wise elders instead of greedy old white men. Maybe someday we’ll get to give it a try.
