There are lots of reasons not to use ChatGPT (or any AI) but it’s silly to think the consumer subscribers cancelling their subscriptions will make a dent. The real money is in the enterprise contracts. They only have a paywall to set limits on the overhead.
We can’t vote with anything but our wallets here, so this is a thing we can do to set least reduce their income. And considering they’re losing close to $100 million every day already, I can’t help but suspect nickel and diming them a bit still hurts.
It’s the kind of shit that can work long run. It worked against some AAA studios. I remember people saying that would never make a difference, but the sales numbers paint another story.
It just takes time to gain momentum.

Voting with our wallets is unfortunately not a great strategy, as most of these companies have realized that they don’t need to bother selling us things anymore. But it can be one of a toolbox… because it works sometimes. We do have other options, including shouting criticism from the rooftops, demonizing the CEOs behind this, and perhaps even voting at ballots.
There are people here and other places on the internet who can make a difference in enterprise contracts as well. I am part of an AI pilot program to roll out ChatGPT at my company right now. You can be sure that I am actively pointing out that, among other things, OpenAI is being sued by several entities for stealing data when their primary promise to us is “we won’t use your data”. That feedback matters and some of us learn about that stuff from places like this.

It’s very strange to me how so many puff pieces got written about it in so little time. At least they’re co-opting quotes and articles that raise legitimate issues, but it’s kind of redundant.
It’s also striking that the movement bears the name and logo of ChatGPT while telling us it is bad. It almost looks like an ad. Especially now, when many advertisements take advantage of cynicism. (I’ve seen speculation that the AI “Friend” pin intentionally used posters with empty white backgrounds to encourage graffiti or perhaps they added it themselves.)

Local llms have barely reached the point where output is comprehensible, in the mean time chatgpt can effectively scam elderly people.
Not true. 500Mb models suck ass and are just here for fun. A lot of local models in the 2.5Gb range can run on a phone and produce very coherent output on par with free-to-use LLMs without actually destroying the planet (while using them I mean, training is still a nightmare).
“Fun” fact, political bias is baked in the local models too, don’t ask Qwen3 about what happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989…
I haven’t been following much of the new developments of these self-hostable AI. Can you actually self-host anything decent?
I have played around these smaller models in the past and honestly anything smaller than LLama 4 Scout was just not very useful. Now Llama 4 Scout was “17B Active parameters, 16 experts and 109B Total parameters” so not sure what that even means.
Dang it, yet another boycott I can’t participate in because I already wasn’t buying the thing in the first place.

Students also talk about how they wish bubble pops so job market gets better but run to chatgpg if they don’t immediately know how to do something.
Get ollama and open web ui. Much better and more private.
just because it’s self hosted doesn’t mean it’s all private though.
OWUI is built using node libraries which typically has a large attack surface. wouldn’t be surprised if some illicit group figures this out and tries to activate something for a mitm attack that sniffs out prompts for things like keys, tokens, etc.
don’t confuse selfhosted with privacy. it’s still your responsibility to ensure privacy enforcement.

ollama itself is safe the same way VLC Media Player is safe. You just load a model like an MP4. I don’t think it’s uniquely vulnerable to anything, as it just spits out text.
Now the real trouble comes when people decide to connect it to a command line…
