Graphic content warning: This story contains information about suicide and other graphic themes

When Mark Epstein heard the news his brother Jeffrey had died by suicide in a Manhattan jail cell, he thought that made sense. Jeffrey wouldn’t want to spend his life locked up. He had no reason to doubt it.

“I fully expected them to come out of the autopsy saying, ‘It’s unfortunate, but Jeffrey committed suicide.’ But that’s not what happened,” he told the ABC.

The independent pathologist who Mark hired to attend the autopsy believed the death looked more like a homicide. The New York deputy assistant medical examiner conducting the autopsy said she required further information before making a ruling.

100% he was killed. Public enemy #1 and all your powerful allies are paranoid you’ll spill everything out of desperation? No way you’re doing your time and no fucking way are you escaping and are ‘still alive’. No one would take the risk harbouring someone who’s lost all their power and influence, and is a liability.

Exactly. At that point the only leverage he had over anyone was the secrets he held on his elite “friends”. There’s no reason to think he wouldn’t have spilled to save his own skin, so all the more motivation for his elite “friends” to prevent that by force

unless the secrets were with another agency and that agency wanted to demonstrate to other operatives that they were looked after.
