Lemmy.ml has some pretty active communities on it. Might be worth it for OP to look over their most active communities and see if any interest them. If so, you have the option of blocking communities instead of the whole instance.

Lemmygrad and hexbear pretty much stick to their sociopolitical beliefs. If that’s not your bag, then no real loss in blocking those instances.

Nope. Zero tolerance for .ml communities. Even if I’d otherwise be interested, their admins are so unpleasant that I would not recommend anyone participate in them.

Welcome!! What are you interested in? There are a lot of communities here, but unfortunately not quite as many as the other place. >_> However, it’s easy to create new ones!

To contradict what the other kind commenter said, for an app I recommend Boost for Lemmy. ;)

Nice! So (assuming you’re on a PC), you want to click on “communities” at the top and then search for whatever. I personally like these ones: Bandcamp, Music, Indieheads, and anime. Remember to click “all” when you’re searching!

Learn how to block people, communities, and instances. Personally, I’m not into anime, so I block the ani.social instance and whatever anime communities start up on other instances.

Not into sports so I block most sports comms.

I also block users whose names are just too narcissistic, banal, or vulgar.

      This.

The vast majority of content here is posted by a few dozen users.

Blocking a few of them really changes the tone.

This may sound like a dumb question and I already have accounts for it but would I need different accounts to join certain communities? I currently have shit just works and club account

I don’t think so. I only have a lemmy.world account and so far I’ve been able to access everything.

No, any of your accounts should be able to see all communities you might wish to join.

There’s an exception to that, but it’s not worth worrying about for ages. This may be less likely, as you’re on ani.social and that should be the instance best aligned with your interests; once you’re used to Lemmy, you may find that a community you want is on an instance that isn’t federated with your instance. In that case it’s easy to export your profile and move.

Well this is a very, um, specific recommendation, but LemmyNSFW was the go to place for adult content on Lemmy but it recently died and has been replaced with Fedinsfw.app. You know, in case you need a specialized alt…

So, I see you joined ani.social and you have made mention of enjoying Japanese media elsewhere in this thread. In that case, I have some community recommendations for you:

There are plenty of other communities out there for specific pieces of media, if you are looking for those as well. Some of the more active ones I am aware of:

And thanks for being on Lemmy! Try to keep in mind that all the less-active-than-you’d-hope communities need your help. Engage where you can to support the community building effort, it makes a difference here.

This. I was just thinking about it this morning for some reason. “I wish my niche Lemmy communities were more active. Wait. I’m part of the reason they’re not! Time to post more.”

One thing I’ve noticed is that, if a community looks dead, you can post in it and people will still see it. Like, there are communities where there hasn’t been a post in four months, but then someone posts in it, and it gets 10-12 replies. This seems to be very different from Reddit, where inactive communities would never make it to your front page, even if you were subscribed to them.

So, don’t be disappointed if you find a community about something you’re interested in, but it looks inactive. There might actually be like dozen people who will see your post and want to talk about it.

You mentioned music and manga in another post; a couple of related ones I’m subscribed to are:

there’s only about 30 active subs, most people here are ultra left wing and feel that downvoting and yelling insults at people with opinions different from them are their version of activism

    enjoy ☺️
