Much of the language is stolen French, with the diabolical inherent spelling traps, the other reason reform is required is the halting of the vowel change, which is why some words, though written the same, sound different - one example: though (tho) and bough (bau).
Yes but a lot is also language change. Knight for example was just spoken with a K and a fricative at that time and place. The writing just wasn’t adapted to the changes in speech.
