Is it finally time to buy it or should i wait for 5 more years?
Do Constellation NPCs (e.g. the four you can romance) still turn on you if you kill the leader of a crew holding a hostage or attacking your ship?
So there’s been this bug since launch, and it’s been reported to Bethesda several times through official channels, and they never cared about it for like a year (up to Shattered Space) and they just did not seem to care. You would get a misc. quest (e.g. through the Akila City bounty board, or you could happen upon it in space) and there would be a crew of pirates (or sometimes the snake guys, or spacers, or any other enemy faction) and you would have to rescue the ship’s crew. You could kill all the bad guys, but if you killed their leader — which was the trigger to complete the side quest — every member of Constellation would turn on you, saying you disappointed them and you had to go apologise to each one of them. And then if you did it a second time, they would not forgive you.
I did all 240 temples to maximise all 24 Starborn powers. I must have done Vanguard 7-8 times, pirates 5-6 times (mostly for the pirates but sometimes for the other faction), rangers 4-5 times, and the Deus Ex inspired shit show faction twice. I forget their name. They’re on Neon City, but passing by any advertisement booth will trigger the quest line to start. Best gun is obviously the one at the end of the pirate quest, but even the standard, unnamed one is nearly as good, and my first stop was always to Neon to steal it out of the shop, because why pay for it when you can go invisible and take it off the wall? Then they nerfed invisibility but still refused to fix the Constellation faction bug. That sucked.
One comment says Starfield is Todd Howard’s baby, but the impression I got was that the game existed to sell paid mods and that Bethesda really did not give two shits about the game. Meanwhile, the Mass Effect Legendary Edition came out like a decade prior, goes on sale for six bucks all the time, and is a far better story, and game. I am a sucker for the shooting in Bethesda games, and Starfield is no exception. I own Shattered Space on Xbox, but not the base game (I played it on GamePass). Still might pick it up if it goes on sale low enough. I don’t even really hate Starfield, I just wish Bethesda cared about it as much as some of the fans. And not even the crazy ones saying you’re a fool (or something else bad) if you don’t see the genius… I just mean people who enjoy Starfield. I wish they liked it that much. I wish they cared about those fans.
It’s fine. It’s not going to get any better with age. Look people will say it’s crap, it’s shit, it’s horrible. It’s not. It’s just, fine. It’s not amazing, it’s not groundbreaking, it’s just plainly fine.
The real issue is that they obviously had a lot of really cool ideas that were all left half finished or cut it out for the sake of simplicity. We can’t have advanced mining, that’d be too complex. We can’t have too many story lines, it’d confuse people.
So, treat it as it is, it’s an okay game, it’s fun, it’s just not going to be RDR2 or Cyberpunk. I’d say it’s solidly worth 30-40 dollars. Pick it up if it’s on sale.
An ok game is worth 40$? You sound rich. Or maybe i just sound poor…
Doesn’t that depend on how much fun you get out of it? If I have 30hrs of fun for 30 bucks, that seems okay-ish, doesn’t it? And overall I had hundreds of hours in 1buck-games and also mere minutes in 60 buck games.
Compared to like buying a movie for 20 bucks just to have 2hrs of fun? Or a holiday for 10.000 bucks for just 3 weeks of fun?
I think games are mostly a good bang for bucks.
I’m waiting for the $5 usd sale, I might be waiting a very long time
I have a feeling that when the price gets low enough they’ll release a Special Edition so they can bump it back up. Starfield was Todd Howard’s baby, so I suspect it’ll continue to get the long-term treatment even though it was a middling game.
I’ll wait til he dies if I have to
Exactly. There are a ton of games on my wishlist, so I’ll just wait and wait and wait.
Both fallout 3, Skyrim, and fallout 4 have hit the $5 USD price point… it’s just a matter of time
Try to get into this game when it was on game pass but, god, it was so boring a generic.
Not worth. Game is a snooze fest, imo.
OP, what do you find most appealing about Starfield? That might give me a better idea of how to provide a better answer.
I enjoy fo4 for the exploration part, and also kinda dig base building and the ship building intrigued me. I don’t think i need something super deep to hold me, but it should be fun enough. I’m most worried about the exploration part though, it seems to take the biggest hit because it doesn’t seems handcrafted anymore.
Yeah, with your criteria I’d wait for a sale, but I’d still give it a shot, for sure.
That special Bethesda feeling was still there for me, but not as abundant.
There are handcrafted locations scattered across the galaxy, they are worth a visit. Just touching down on a planet and mindlessly explore is pointless IMO. Especially since the POI on planets aren’t even persistent. If you land at the same location several times, there will be different POI showing on the radar. All random, except for the ones possible to scan from space.
Ugh this was what instantly made me abandon it. Procedural generation is great in theory but (for me!) Never ever worked. It’s just boring the minute you identified the building blocks.
It’s alright. Spent a few hundred hours it when it launched but haven’t picked it up since. It has it’s moments and it has the bethesda rpg dna ( for better or worse ) so if you like bethesda games there’s a chance you’ll like it. In short: Gunplay and shipbuilding are pretty great imo. Questlines - some good some bad, but most are very milquetoast. Base building is meh. Exploration kinda blows and all the planetside POIs are extremely repetitive.
I enjoyed it for what it was on release to be honest. I have a pretty high tolerance for imperfections in games though and grew up with the elder scrolls/fallout/Bethesda games so I’m more than used to loading screen, enter room, loading screen, exit room, loading screen, change area, loading screen, etc etc…
If you do play, without spoiling anything, there is a “mechanic” that is pretty much dependant on new game plus. Basically if you want to get stronger through this specific system then I wouldn’t waste time base building or whatever because those things will just be lost in the new game plus. Can just beat the story a few times, or just once to see what it’s all about, and then “settle down” in a playthrough to do all the base stuff.
loading screen, enter room, loading screen, exit room, loading screen, change area, loading screen, etc etc…
the problem for me was taking all of that, and then adding multiple steps of space travel in the [change area] part.
How is the exploration part? I like Bethesda game for that part and i heard starfield doesn’t excel in that end.
Also i didn’t know there’s a ng+
The exploration is somewhat lacking. Naturally they depend on mods to fix their issues. There are a lot of locations but only a handful unique locations to explore that they scatter around planets/moons and just repeat the same layout.
If I bought this game it would be for the Star Wars mod.
I got it at launch, spent 80 hours in it, and had my fun. With that being said, Bethesda games have hooked me my entire life, starting with Morrowond at age 9.
I keep meaning to go back and finish the main storyline for Starfield. It’s not as engrossing of a world as Fallout or Skyrim, but it’s fun enough for what it is - it’s just not “great” the way Bethesda’s other games are.
Might be worth waiting for a sale price though, there’s always one around the corner.
Honestly, get back to Morrowind. it holds up. And the mods are insanely high quality. TR adds more content than was in the base game and at a genuinely similar quality level. I don’t know how they do it!
I’ll wait for a complete version for like 75% off. It’s been almost 3 years of bad word of mouth. After the PS5 release, it shouldn’t be too long until that game falls to obscurity and stays relevant with deep discounts
I was “given” this game with a GPU purchase. I have launched it a handful of times. The game is just so pointless, I’m never engaged. I’m not excited about anything in the game. Story, gameplay, or setting (vibes) do not interest me in the slightest. And I’m a person who genuinely enjoys everything from the STALKER series. One of the most difficult and monotonous gameplay loops. And I cannot find it in me to like anything about Starfield. Don’t waste your money even if it’s at a discount. Find some cool Immersive Sim on Itch, you’ll be much more entertained. Buying this at anytime is giving Bethesda the wrong message, nobody wants this.
It is a good game. This update seems like missing pieces that should have been there from the start.
All parts of the game are however not great. There are a lot of concepts that are not sufficient finished or that doesn’t tie in well with the rest of the experience IMO. You have to pick the pieces that are good to have a good time. Especially the main side-questlines are good. Main story is OK. Other elements are hit and miss.
