Intensive care nurses immediately doubted the word of federal immigration officers when they arrived at a Minneapolis hospital with a Mexican immigrant who had broken bones in his face and skull.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents initially claimed Alberto Castañeda Mondragón had tried to flee while handcuffed and “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall,” according to court documents filed by a lawyer seeking his release.
But staff members at Hennepin County Medical Center determined that could not possibly account for the fractures and bleeding throughout the 31-year-old’s brain, said three nurses familiar with the case.

Shouldn’t the agents who brought him in be treated as suspects in an attempted murder case? They should be detained and questioned and charged with obstruction of justice if they don’t comply. That’s what would happen to literally anyone not wearing that uniform who walks into a hospital with a person with life-threatening injuries that appear to be inflicted maliciously.

AP shared the details of Castañeda Mondragón’s injuries with Dr. Lindsey C. Thomas, a board-certified forensic pathologist who worked as a medical examiner in Minnesota for more than 30 years. She agreed with the assessment of hospital staff.
“I am pretty sure a person could not get these kinds of extensive injuries from running into a wall,” Thomas said, adding that she would need to see the CT scans to make a more definitive finding.
“I almost think one doesn’t have to be a physician to conclude that a person can’t get skull fractures on both the right and left sides of their head and from front to back by running themselves into a wall,” she said.
So was the ICE agent dumb enough to think this was a believable story or did they just not give a fuck if anyone believed it or not? It could really go either way.
The nurses interviewed by AP said they felt intimidated by ICE’s presence in the critical care unit and had even been told to avoid a certain bathroom to minimize encounters with officers. They said staff members are using an encrypted messaging app to compare notes and share information out of fear that the government might be monitoring their communications.

We have literal footage from multiple angles of ICE agents murdering people and the government is protecting them. The agents don’t give a fuck. They’ve been given permission to kill anyone they want and nothing will happen.

I’m starting to think this also. Literally every day I see some dipshit claiming that no one cared about ICE until it was a white person (they say that about both of the recent cases). Literally have never gotten one response (from the person claiming it’s only a race thing) to my replies saying it’s because these killings were on video. It’s fucking bizarre.
Is everyone who says “people only care because they are white” forget about George Floyd? Pretty sure there were very large, nationwide protests for that.

Back around the beginning of the month I got into it with someone here who was trying to play like they live in Minneapolis and know all about the city while they were putting out similar ragebait, except they had no idea, literally none, where George Floyd was killed. Oh, and the “American” genius who was holding forth on all the things the US Constitution says that are not actually in there while having multiple English lapses. That was some shit.
I should add that when I see this, I never offer the specific correction because I want other pretenders like them to fall into the same trap. So I pick around it to let them flounder in their obvious errors because I know anyone paying attention will see it for themselves, and I’d suggest that to others as well: point it out without actually correcting it.
To be clear, if someone’s not American and you have a bone to pick with the US, so what. Join the club.

Race is probably a component, but a big one is video of the incident getting to the public. Watching an unambiguous violation instead of reading an account is far more powerful, and removes all doubt of witness reliability.

HIPAA laws would have prevented hospital personnel from speaking publicly about this, and of course ICE was hushing it up, seems like his friends broke the story after he was out.
HIPAA prevents the discussion of personally identifying information and access to information that doesn’t have to do with your job. The nurses and doctors that treated this person could have absolutely confirmed that ICE brought somebody in with a crushed skull as long as they left it at that.
I don’t know the exact wording, but I don’t think so. Sure, you can share information if it’s anonymized, but that isn’t. There was only one person brought in by ICE I assume. It isn’t anonymous. It’d be incredibly easy to tie it to a single person.

It did. I saw early on that it was her wife there at the scene of the murder.
I guess it depends where you are and how you read the news. From outside the USA I saw a lot of details about the murder, and the backlash, before reading that her wife was in the car at the time. It probably took a couple of days?
“Her wife” was included in news reports within about an hour. Didn’t seem like any sort of delay to me.
I recall the first reports talking about her dead husband and acting like her kid was an orphan.
I recall the tone changing in how people talked about her in various threads and articles depending on how prevalent her being gay was.
Maybe we saw those reports within an hour, but I recall people still responding to the straight-washed articles the next day.
I noticed no change like this at all. We’ve had nationwide protests for Renee Good.
I’m not going to say her sexuality hasn’t changed the responses by some, it absolutely has. But its not like it was somehow held back.
That said, there are people saying things like “Pretti shouldn’t have reached for his gun” - a statement that is absolutely insane considering he not only never reached for his gun, but was also disarmed when he was murdered.
Thats an issue with ignorance, not with reporting. The information is readily available, some just grab that first headline and never bother to learn more.

It’s almost like incidents without video filmed from multiple people and widely shared online don’t get as much attention as nurses telling a story they were told about an incident we don’t have video of.
It’s really bad, but it’s also entirely understandable that it gets less attention.
Its a lot harder to verify which side is wrong in a he said she said. Sure a lot of us on the fediverse will always side against the cops but most people won’t.
