There’s been a couple of minor dust-ups on mastodon about the conduct of so-called “big accounts” there that I do not care to comment on, but it has got me thinking — do we even have “big accounts” on the threadiverse (Lemmy/piefed/mbin)? I don’t think there’s any handle I’ve seen where I’ve been like “oh yeah, that person.” Am I just bad at remembering usernames, or does the community/thread style of discussion remove all continuity for a single account?
PugJesus and The_Picard_Maneuver have already been named. The former basically single handedly keeping some history communities alive and the latter a lot of meme and Star Trek content.
For specific communities, @BallShapedMan@lemmy.world is a mainstay on !artshare@lemmy.world
@Agent_Karyo@piefed.world posts a lot of gaming content.
@MimicJar@lemmy.world is basically keeping !thesimpsons@lemmy.world in the feed signelhandedly.

Wait…
CM002

I’ve wondered if I’m at fault for the decline in content on artshare. Do I share too often or too much?
Because of the thinning of that community I’ve started spreading out to Bluesky looking for a larger community. Mastadon is pretty thin and I find it hard to find a community there at all sadly.
You don’t cross my feed that often, but you always get an upvote from me.
🥳🥳🥳
Thank you!
You’re welcome
TotallyNotJessica in the transfem meme corner
You don’t recognise Satan’s Maggoty Cum Fart?
I’ve been meaning to propose marriage to that mad lad, but I keep forgetting. Not a real marriage though, it’s to tied down, more like a federated marriage where anyone can join and leave when they want and block out corporations they don’t like… maybe more of an aquantience rather.
One of my favs
Not the hero we need, but the ons we deserve.
I know of a @SantasMagicalComfort@piefed.world lmao
Wasn’t that just their Christmas alt?
Never mind these no name nobodies in the other comments. I have decided to grace this thread. Please continue to anoint me with rare fragrances and oils; fan me with large palm tree leaves, etc.

The_picard_maneuver I feel was a large reason there was even enough meme content to make it start feeling like a reddit replacement for me. I don’t hate power users here since we need more posts to keep the fediverse content active. Maybe if we had 10k+ upvote posts in a single day it’d get old seeing the same faces, but if the content is good it’s elevated. I’d only want something done about it if there were bots who follow-voted to achieve misleading numbers.
Idk for me a ‘Power User’ becomes indistinguishable form a content bot after a while.
Whatever happened to him?
https://piefed.world/u/The_Picard_Maneuver he’s still active and modding a few communities still.
Plenty of accounts that I see commenting here regularly. Not “big accounts” per se but rather just people I seem to be running into constantly. This is such a small platform that it’s pretty easy to get niche fame. That’s why I’m on my 10th account.
You’re on your tenth account because you’re worried that people will get a sense of who you are and what you stand for?
I’ve had to deal with a stalker in the past. After that, I learned not to put all my eggs into one basket. If someone recognizes me here they won’t get acces to my entire message history now.
Makes sense! I’m sorry that happened to you, and thanks for sharing.
this is lemmy we’re talking about. There’s as much censorship as reddit
This is manifestly untrue. You can stand up an instance and literally no-one can censor you.
Lmao. ‘There is no censorship, you jus have to leave, make your own space and do whatever you want.’
That is censorship.
I run a personal website where I host my resume. Is it censorship that I don’t allow you to post there, either?
Obviously meant through a regular account on your average instance
It’s not censorship when I decide I don’t want to host your speech on my site. Censorship is when the government says you can’t host speech at all.
Censorship is not only a government thing AT ALL. There are different uses of the word censorship.
Literally the first lines of Wikipedia
Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information. This may be done on the basis that such material is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or “inconvenient”. Censorship can be conducted by governments and private institutions.
It’s one thing not to accept an article on a newspaper which is only meant to accept a couple articles, and many of them having a clear and assumed editor line; and another to remove after publishing a comment or post on a public discussion forum, often claiming freedom of speech.
If there’s an editor line, then publicly assume it and make it clear when it’s an online discussion forum: reveal your biases.
Considering how ml keeps only temp banning me instead of perm banning, I would say it’s significantly less than reddit
Would the same speech have gotten you banned from Reddit?
There’s a handful of posters here that I definitely recognize. I don’t know if I’d call any of them big accounts, though that may not be a bad thing.
Are they mostly people who are active in your favorite community or just people who you see around sometimes?
In my case both. Some people are 90% of the posts in the community but others are really healthy with more posters.
Reddit was like this once a decace ago. With much worse mod tools amd less transpatency.
Iteration is key for building a better platform after all!
(With all the mistakes on record from someone else XD)
Both for me too.
I create new accounts every so often, and need to block all the same assholes again.
I wouldn’t describe them as “big” accounts, they’re just prolific posters of annoying trash.
Not all of them are from .ml
I think there’s a small handful of powerusers like LadyButterfly, Stamets, The_Picard_Maneuver, formerly FlyingSquid, etc, but they seem to me mostly non-problematic, mostly don’t seem to overreach, and all seem to be actual people who actually interact and engage in discussions as members of their respective communities. I think some of them could post less or be more discerning in what they post, if it was up to me, but I understand that currently all of these type of users are interested in the growth of Lemmy and motivated to do their part to provide content, so I appreciate them vastly more than any critique I have of them. I am wary of the influence and soft power that can be accrued by powerusers, but as of right now I personally don’t think it’s a particular issue the community is currently facing.
But also I am not the most active or engaged community member, especially in the drama or social politics side of the fediverse, so the likelihood of blindspots in my view is high, I’ll admit.
Know anything about squid? I was wondering if they ever got a diagnosis.
Hope he’s doing alright
Nothing at all. I don’t know any of these users other than through brief interactions in comments.
There’s that guy who makes accounts on seemingly every instance imaginable and seems to be a moderator on dozens of communities as well.
The one who makes meta posts about the fediverse or the one who is obsessed with ml and hexbear ?
You talking about c0002 or c002?
Or Blaze
I do wish we had more granular controls of what to block and when, but maybe that’s on me to make that.
All of these users have great stuff, but sometimes their posts to certain communities may align less with my interests. I’ve mostly resorted to blocking those entire communities, but if I could block posts to that community only by specific users, that would be better.
Isn’t Mastodon part of the “threadiverse”?
Also, I feel like there are definitely names I see a lot and recognize, but I don’t think my memory for spelling would be able to write them down here… lol
I don’t include it in my mental model, personally, but I don’t think the term has a well-agreed-upon meaning. I use fediverse for any federated activitypub server, like mastodon and pixelfed, and then use threadiverse for the community/post/thread style instances like lemmy, mbin and piefed. For me, the threadiverse is the subset of the fediverse where you say, “oh, that’s just like reddit!”
Oh shit, you’re right, I think I got confused with fediverse. lol, I’m not sure i’d heard “threadiverse” until this post now that I think about it.
the Kolanaki guy, that Chinese guy who keeps changing his name but has an ROC flag profile picture, LadyButterfly (she posts a lot in a community I moderate, very pleasant person). I think I’ve had my scrapings with Pugjesus and afraidofzombies, good to have discussion. There’s also someone on here called “Satan’s maggoty cum fart”
Oh and YappyMonotheist is one of my favourites. He’s a very pleasant gentleman. There was a mormon guy here called Baldprophet, haven’t seen him in ages
❤️👋
My friend! ☺️👋
Flying Squid was memorable but has been gone for a while. My understanding was they moved to a different country and haven’t posted since.
Squid was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Serious mental issues.
I remember them. Moved to the UK. Emperor帝 also disappeared.
I think I’m on here too much because I was kind of surprised, my first reaction was “of course! People like stamets, ladybutterfly, silence7, PugJesus, The_Picard_Maneuver, etc…”
But I shouldn’t really think of this as obvious, but more of a sign that I should be on here less lol
I got big letters for my account. 🤷♂️
Makes me wonder how many people I see over and over and just don’t notice because their names aren’t enormous
^ this guy. You can see those letters from orbit.
I used to see you everywhere. Then I got the “Voyager for Lemmy” app. Now I rarely ever notice you.
Voyager doesn’t do custom username fonts or icons, so everyone’s username is just plaintext. You blend in with every other user in my feed, and I rarely look at usernames, so I tend to miss users that I haven’t specifically tagged myself.
Thunder does render display names by default, but offers the setting to disable it. I do disable it.
Switch to Sync
I actually switched away from Sync. I forget why, it’s been a while, but something about that app was bothering me, so I shopped around and ended up on Voyager.
The lack of profile pictures and custom username fonts is probably the only downside to Voyager. But I love everything else about it. And it’s free; I had to pay for Sync to get rid of ads and other junk in the app.
I really like it, it was my Reddit app for years so it was easy to stay with
Yeah it was my Reddit app too. But when I switched over to Lemmy, there were a lot of initial issues with the app, and the dev would vanish for months before responding to complaints.
He was very reactive when he came back, addressing every issue people pinged him on. But then he’d just be gone again and any further issues were stuck until he decided to return.
I remember that being a problem I had with his Lemmy app in the beginning. I specifically remember webm files didn’t load at all, until I pinged him right before he pushed an update and he added it to his patch. But then his patch broke a few other things and nobody could reach him for another 3 months.
I still can’t remember what the final straw was for me, but I had an ongoing issue that had no resolution until the dev decided to show his face again and I decided that was it. I needed an app with a more reactive developer.
You were the first person I thought of, actually.
I really liked your neighbourhood in Athens.
You were one of the first i though of
Wait. You guys look at posters’ names?
I’m astounded. I had no idea.
Well, there’s no following here, there are just people that create posts way too often in too many communities so you see them all the time - like cm0002, I also see a lot of Deceptichum and LadyButterfly but not as much as cm0002
Yes that is the crucial difference. Without followers determining your reach, every post earns it’s upvotes on an equal footing with the others, regardless of author.
It’s a much better system.
Follower-based networks like Mastodon and Twitter inevitably end up with a handful of people dominating the space because their posts get boosted which gets them more followers which gets them more boosts etc in a spiraling way.
cm0002 is a a repost bot lol. if you’re upvoting their content you’re harming the fediverse.
They say they just have an RSS feed and they manually crosspost. I haven’t looked into if they have times they’re inactive (both because it’s not worth my time, and it’s particularly annoying now with the 30 different accounts), but their behavior is incredibly bot-like even if they’re not literally a bot. I’ve noticed a few times (read: this isn’t a valid statistical sample omg) that they got the cross post off within a minute of the original post.
Sometimes I feel like I spend too much time on this site, so I’m pretty glad to not see my name popping up in any of these comments, ha. Makes me feel less like a dingle with no life.
I’m pretty glad to not see my name popping up in any of these comments, ha.
Same here. At one point, I tried to be known for providing a certain type of content here, to help fill out a then-quiet community. But I’m kind of glad no one really recognizes me until they see a post by me. I’m here daily, but I mostly lurk, so I don’t particularly want to wake up to hundreds of comments in my inbox every day.
And yes, I’m still trying to provide that content despite my apparent hiatus. I’m just dealing with seasonal depression (as well as all the national news drama going on in my home state 20+ minutes from my home), so it’s hard to get motivated to be creative lately.
I recognize your username, but don’t actually remember what type of stuff you comment lol
I can’t remember your username but i recognize your account, i see ya often
Lol, if anyone recognize me, it’s probably because I’m trauma-dumping on the internet again 🫠
I don’t reply to your content often, but every time I see your handle pop up I wish you well, just because I am unfortunately so personally familiar with the trauma-creating circumstances you’re dealing with. I wish you could see you as I see you: someone with something so completely different from their banal, cruel family of origin that they have no knowledge of what a truly gifted person they are just to be able to survive and even see past that shit. Good luck to you, and I mean that.
I actually enjoy many of your comments
I recognize your account and see you around a lot. I like your insightful posts, especially about Chinese language. I was just thinking about one of them earlier today, that country names in Chinese may predispose certain assumptions about the country like USA being written as “beautiful country” etc.
what type of stuff you comment lol
Nothing of consequence!
lol I feel like I’ve seen you name before, but maybe that’s just because active members here tend to stand out a bit? Anyway keep on doing what you’re doing. I love this place and I’m glad there are others who do too
People with a unique profile pic stands out more, or unusual characters like the big bold blue KOLANAKI
