Just curious if anyone knows if the platform has seen even more recent growth since now Tiktok is even more so a state owned social media platform?
Should we tell people Lemmy exists or is the organic slow growth much better long term?
No
I fucking hope not. Send them to twitter or facebook, don’t need them here.
They’re welcome, but the platform in the fediverse that covers the Tiktok-kind of content specifically is Loops.
Yeah. I wouldn’t expect people who want algorithm-fed video to switch to a text based platform like Lemmy.
Wow the fediverse has a platform for everything. I was surprised to see there’s 1 or 2 Instagram alternatives too (e.g pixelfed)
I don’t really see a crossover that would make sense. Why would you move to a mostly text-only format forum from a short-form video site?
I’d be wondering if Loops has seen any significant rise in users, personally, considering it is basically TikTok for the Fediverse.

There’s an uptick in active and total users. It’s not much, around +400 accounts, but a clear deviation from the line prior to the tiktok overtake.
Should we tell people Lemmy exists
Tell them, sure. Preach it to them, a little less so imho. I often see people being such a pain in the you know where insisting on making other people using whatever it is they’re using, or proving them wrong when they don’t want to. It’s not the best way to make it attractive to anyone.
or is the organic slow growth much better long term?
There is no assurance it will get better. The reality is that it can fail, like it so frequently happen with anything ‘organic’. Living things can grow for sure, but they can also not grow at all and die. For many reasons, including the lack of care and… excessive care too (try giving too much water to a plant, or too much food to some creature).
What I do is tell people wanting to reach me I don’t use centralized social media at all. And that they can find me around here (or on my blog, or through email).
A few will indeed reach out to me using those, while most will simply not bother trying. Quite normally, I would say, as most don’t care about reaching out to me specifically (or anyone else, for that matter), they care about getting an answer (from anyone) to whatever is bothering them, or getting instant feedback/validation. And they care about it as easily as possible, putting in as little efforts as possible… meaning they’re not looking forward to trying new and less popular ways.
I’m doubtful most tiktokers are interested in lemmy as a platform. Closest thing to tiktok that I can think of, that is part of the fediverse, is peertube.
Loops.
Loops would be the fedi TikTok alternative now
Fleeing tiktok --> Instagram/Snapchat as first port-of-call. Almost every tiktok user will have one or both of those
Fleeing tiktok, Instagram or Snapchat and seeking a new SM --> Reddit
Fleeing Reddit (or Twitter) —> fediverse. I’m actually not sure how else anyone would discover the fediverse unless they A) are highly conscious of digital privacy, B) follow a creator who gives it a shout out, or perhaps C) are very into forums (they would probably try Reddit first)
Should we tell people Lemmy exists or is the organic slow growth much better long term?
In my opinion, both :). You telling people that Lemmy exists is organic slow growth unless you do it on a YouTube channel to many many people all at once.
if anything people are probably gonna jump to some platform like https://skylight.social/. ATProto platforms tend to get astronomically higher user counts even if in practice ending up rather centralized. if i tell an ex-twitter user to check out Mastodon and just Federate an ActivityPub Instance Decentralize Free Open Source Interconnected they’re gonna zone out. versus telling them to join bluesky @ bsky.app
Tik Tok is not a narc, it’s a propaganda tool.
TikTok almost singlehandedly turned American/Western opinions on Israel cause the genocide was being livestreamed and discussed openly, it makes sense.
That’s exactly why they decided it had to go and Trump and his goon squad hand picked the new owners. Remember he was fine with the Chinese ownership when he thought it was what got him the election. When it started turning opinions against the ruling class position is when he turned on it.
Talk about closing the barn door after the horse already bolted out.
Now it just looks like a flagrant admission of guilt.
It’s weird being a zoomer who doesn’t use tiktok and hearing that that’s pretty much the only reason most people oppose Israel. Kind of sad. I like to think that if tiktok had never existed we’d have made people aware in some other way.
