Denver Mayor Mike Johnston signed an executive order Thursday that’s intended to protect protesters demonstrating against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations if the city becomes the next target for a surge of agents.
His order requires Denver Police Department officers to intervene and detain ICE agents if they see any using “excessive force.” It also bans the federal agents from using city-owned property for their operations.
Standing in front of the City and County Building in downtown Denver, Johnston told reporters that his goal with the order wasn’t to provoke President Donald Trump. He said he didn’t have any information about whether ICE or the Trump administration intended to send an influx of agents to the city anytime soon.
“My first job is to run this city,” he said. “But in today’s America, that means answering questions from our residents about what happens if ICE troops descend on our city.”
I’ll have to look for a video later. I want to see if any police were there and watch their faces. My personal belief is that law enforcement at all levels is populated with people with similar morals as ICE.
ICE has caused more harm to a city. They are actively bringing crime with them. Schools have been in lockdown because of them. They go into small businesses and neighborhoods in plainclothes and face masks, making the city unsafe.

The cops won’t do it. This is why mayors haven’t been doing this. Cops will just ignore the order and expose that the mayor isn’t the one with power. Anyone expecting the fucking cops to protect anyone from ICE is delusional.
Then it’ll be easy to tell which cops need to be immediately fired for cause. If trump can purge the military, mayors can purge the police.
i mean, they are all apparatus of the state. local police unlikely to arrest federal police because that is absolutely not going to end well for your local police department given the vindictiveness of the current federal security leadership. they are all on the same team, even when there’s infighting.
Then they can enjoy unemployment. Fuck 'em.
I think there’s also a high likelihood the Supreme Court tells them they can’t do this. Even though it’s totally legal as of existing precedent.
Johnston has his heart in the right place, but DPD is not exactly “stand up to fascism” material themselves.
If the cops even hope to attempt a resuscitation of the public image of their “institution” - there better be a ton of footage of them detaining and arresting ICE goons.

I can’t wait for city cops to start arresting ICE Apes. Hopefully there’s a shoot-out, and every cop in America will instantly hate the ICE Apes.
Eventually they’ll just stay in Blue cities in friendly Red states, and just abuse innocent people trapped behind enemy lines, where they can expect no assistance from the authorities.

Cops love to abuse people, and they don’t really care who it is. They get in trouble for choosing their own victims, so if they are told that ICE Apes are fair game, they’ll happily go abuse ICE Apes.
They absolutely do care who it is. Notice how they never bother dealing with car noise complaints, coal rollers, or violence committed by right wing demonstrators?
The first two are because they don’t want to do the paperwork.
But risking legal action or armed retaliation?

Taking advantage of a legal loophole to privatize and mobilize your own private occupying army utilizing a department that was already out of control financially and legally while the world watches and commentates like they did with Palestine.
It’s a good year plus to most people realizing what’s going on in the midterms, siezed media may even prolong that. That’s a long time for a militarized police to further militarize and normalize their presence and to test out all the neat counter insurgency technology that anyone can sell them the world’s largest pocketbook.
It’s a good little while to decapitate any potential organizations and sprinkle around some felonies to keep folks from voting and whatnot.
You do have to admire the game and wonder about planning and happenstance.
