I just use ‘Hide Post’ liberally.
I find many people actually hate megathreads. They hate moderators telling them they can’t make a new post with their own take as the post. They hate that their comment gets lost in thousands of comments.
On Lemmy, if you look across communities and see redundant threads, then a megathread isn’t an answer. Megathreads are community/sub based. Not platform based.
That all said, I think megathreads do important work. Lemme just isn’t big enough yet, maybe.
I dislike the concept of mega-threads. It has always sounded to me like a way to drown out information instead of allow for easy access to information, and lowers the importance of the individual post in favor of whoever is more popular.
I think a better option, would be enhancing the crosspost or tagging system to be able to categorize posts by a category, and then for “megathreaded” posts you can just assign a tag. A few front ends already allow you to do usually by putting your tags in parenthesis in the title.
I didn’t want to start a discussion about the pros and cons of megathreads, I just wanted to ask whether this is common practice in the Fediverse. That doesn’t seem to be the case - and for good reason, given the decentralized nature of the network. For the sake of simplicity, it would be welcome for some topics, but I’m sure we’ll manage just fine without it.
We could have multiple community megathreads, and then have every mod go into a kind of thunderdome for all of the communities represented. It could be interesting to watch the first few times.

Piefed I think kinda of merges similar posts, but I’m not exactly sure since I don’t use piefed. Otherwise, each instance can make their own mega thread
I’m on Piedfed(.social). However, since the discussion is still mainly taking place on Lemmy, I’m asking. If there is such a megathread on the war in Iran on .world, for example, I can’t find it.
There sorta has been for some state of the unions and such. I had fun reading and posting as the craziness words came out. The comedy aspect has been harder to maintain as things go on though. Anyway they kinda sorta have been done but you know people have to do them to be a thing.
There is but we’re not a big enough community for them to be relevant. It slows down and confused discourse.
If you create a new community and start up megathreads for big news events, people can vote with their feet (so to speak). Folks who don’t like them can keep posting to their communities, and folks who do can join yours. I like a megathread for folks who have a take on an event, but don’t care to read the particular article they’re commenting under — I totally get it can be tedious to read a bajillion articles on the same event just to participate in the conversation, but it’s also annoying for those of us who are interested in discussing the contents of a specific article. Megathreads seem like a good compromise that can make everyone happy, so long as you understand that your thread will not prevent other kinds of posts in other communities.
