Depression rather than ADHD, but I have a (not extraordinarily uncommon) gene mutation that keeps me from properly metabolizing folate (vitamin B9), which means that my antidepressants weren’t working properly. I have to take a modified vitamin supplement (l-methylfolate) daily along with my cocktail of antidepressants and mood stabilizers.

It doesn’t make me magically awesome, but it helps more than you’d think. So maybe check with your doctor to see if there’s a DNA test you should get in case there’s something that might make a difference.

You could get this info from a blood test. Could be worth a trip if you haven’t been there in a while.

I’ve gotten so many blood tests and unfortunately whatever seems to be wrong is not a simple vitamin fix. I hoped it was!

I’ve stated taking a medication that completely changed my life and it felt like this. Then I did it with another one. And another one. Now I’m working on a fourth one.

Turns out there was a lot wrong with me.

For me, that vitamin is amphetamines. The imposter syndrome never goes away - I still feel like I’ve faked my way into the hilariously awesome management position I finally have after 15 years in the same industry - but most of my coworkers truly wouldn’t know I’m ADHD unless I told them.

I just have to avoid Japan, I guess.

I’m very honest with my coworkers about ADHD because it means that I’m not working at night because I can’t.

But also I was missing SSRIs too. Both together make me feel like I can do anything! Even though I still am a lazy piece of shit.

The vitamin A, best of all vitamins! Turns out I had that deficiency too and now that I’ve been taking supplements for 1,5 years I feel like a different person!

I constantly alternate between this and “it’s incredibly obvious to everyone that I have ADHD.” Usually remembering that other people can’t see inside my head pushes me back into the “nobody would realize that I have ADHD unless I told them.”

For me that missing vitamin was estrogen. It was like I was like someone was putting diesel fuel in a regular gas car. It’s fuel. But that’s car is not going to do so hot. And I wish the second part happened and not people getting upset that you are not running on diesel like all the other diesel vehicles.

House MD did a number to fuel this.

What, you didn’t tell me they were an utter disaster in other parts of their life!! This changes everything. Hastily hobbles with a bottle from over the counter

I have this exact fantasy lol. Hoped the meds would make a complete world of difference but its been meh. And I’m told my ADHD was only mild. So I can’t blame it for me being a weirdo

It helped massively, better concentration while taking it and I sleep better when taking it regularly. No apparent side effects like other meds that I tried.

The only thing that is a pain with it is the ridiculously tedious drugs restrictions and going out of stock causing me to be without it for a week or so once or twice a year.

Do you run into any mood changes? I was on a non-stim for a while and haven’t medicated at all since because I hated how moody it made me.

Were you taking Strattera? I took it for awhile, did not help with my ADHD, made me super moody all day. I switched to Concerta after about 6 months and noticed an immediate difference, so much was I proved. The only downside is I would crash hard around 4pm and I’d be grumpy for a few hours. My psych added a Ritalin booster for me to take around 2PM if I had plans in the afternoon, but ultimately I switched to Adderall ER and that so far has done the trick.

Thanks for the info! It was Atomoxetine, which I think is also under some other names. I need to really get a formal diagnosis though like you did. I’ve encountered that crash before and it’s the worst. Felt like I immediately needed a nap when it hit.

Not with methylphenidate. It has been long enough that I forgot which ones, but I think Vyvanse was one of the ones that really fucked with my moods, making me completely numb. Might have been another one that was newer at the time, but it was like watching a movie about the things I was doing while completely bored.

People definitely react differently to different meds.

That is an insanely astute description of the feeling. It would make me really indifferent to everything and I was noticeably short with people. It was wild how obvious it was to myself too, and not one of those scenarios where someone else has to finally tell you.

I wasn’t even short with people because I just didn’t care. Flat affect, indifferent to everything, just going through the motions with that one I tried.

For me, methylphenidate makes me more engaged in everything. Not manic or overly emotional, just makes my brain slow down to a speed that lets me consider things which also lets me finish things I start as long as there is time before it wears off. If not, I put it on hold and successfully it up again the next day after the next dose. It also lets me decide to stop thinking about something that is on a loop in my head as long as it is still working!

I thought the same way but then I went on vacation after a few years using it, and I didn’t bring the cpap with me… Let me tell you, I now bring it with me for any kind of overnight trip. I felt so terrible on my vacation especially right after waking up and my throat hurt so much. I guess in my case it was like how you don’t notice your own aging so much because you see yourself everyday, but when you visit a relative after a while they notice a massive diference.

Yeah, same here. I think it used to help more but I dunno what’s going on now. Granted I haven’t changed the filter in like a year, that probably ain’t helping.
