  • Realistically it’ll probably be more like a bankruptcy thing and admittedly somewhat like what Trump is doing.

Consider all he’s doing to destroy our industry, science, technology, throw away any global influence and good will, wreck our strong trading position, turn us inward, isolated, xenophobic. Keep people desperate with lost jobs, healthcare, government services. Think how that plays with the $1T in tax cuts for the wealthy, and leaving all our prior debt levels in the dust.

What happens when that all catches up? We forced into austerity measures, high inflation, unending joblessness, military we can’t come close to affording? Tax rates skyrocket and We fight to reclaim those tax cuts for the wealthy.

  • A bit of a catch -22. If you can’t get them, how can you buy them?

Three cars ago I finally gave up on a manual because I couldn’t find one anywhere. There were only a few specific model where it was a choice and I wasn’t interested in them. Turns out to be a good choice, as Boston traffic was much easier to deal with in an automatic.

Two cars ago I got a CVT and it is an amazing piece of technology! Worked out really well.

But now I have an EV, no transmission.

I gave up on teaching my teens to drive a manual because that technology is almost gone. And with EVs being the future, there’s no longer a reason for it to exist

  • Tesla always had “light show” as a fun gimmick. It’s one of the first things you show friends and family.

There’s a few canned versions but apparently you can create your own on usb stick. Supposedly it was an outgrowth of qa, so it includes things like windows and trunk opening and closing, side mirrors folding and unfolding, all timed to music, etc. Even before the active matrix headlights were approved for regular use, one of the canned light shows used them to spell out “Tesla” on whatever is in front of you.

A recent update mentioned new light shows and a way to synchronize. I can certainly imagine a Tesla club having great fun with this

  • My understanding was that many farm workers were entirely legal under temporary work programs. Farmers need a flood of additional workers during harvest, that they can’t afford year round, and people in lower income countries can benefit from a month or two of higher pay.

That’s one of the things that seem missing from this conversation. What parts of it work or don’t work? Wouldn’t it have been much cheaper, easier, respect human rights and the law to adjust that where necessary?

How is that program doing? Still allowed? How do farmers expect to handle the work? Are people being terrorized by ice into not participating because they can expect inhumane treatment based on the color of their skin?

  • These do annoy me. Of course Newsom is not the best candidate but they are distracting everyone from how much better that would be than the current shitshow

And I have to ask y’all, are we really going to an insists on an ideal candidate regardless whether they are electable?

I have no idea whether Newsom is but he has name recognition, presidential presence, and a successful “populist” strategy. He has successfully positioned himself as a leading foil of Trump. All that stuff that seem necessary for getting elected even if they have no part in whether they would do well for their constituents. …. And they’re building a train!

I do always wonder if this is just republicans trying to astroturf “both sides the same”.

  • There’s an argument that most of the stuff done in trumps name would be “ok” if he did it legally and that’s what people wanted. It’s the abuse of authority, the personal enrichment, violating the constitution, holding people above the law, enforcing personal feelings, violating checks and balances that are the critical issues.

I wouldn’t want to live in such a society but it would at least be “legitimate”

  • A few years back the Boston globe did an expose on panhandlers and yeah, there are scammers and you need to recognize them but most people in need are truly people in need.

My take on it was that aggressive panhandlers in prime locations are most likely scammers. People sitting quietly looking defeated are in need. The hard part is deciding whether to help all those in between, but it’s good to remember that most people who look homeless are homeless

  • And move your car once in a while, or otherwise make it look like someone is paying attention to it.

I had a car stolen: ten year old cheap econobox, over 100k miles, nothing in the car. I suppose it could have been an impulse, or it could have been that I had to move the car for street cleaning, left it in a bad spot (unlighted, no foot traffic, under a bridge) and left it there so I wouldn’t have to move it again for next street cleaning - the perils of living in a city and going mostly car free but not entirely giving up your car. Anyhow, I came back a week later and it was gone

Police were useless but offered the opinion that stripped parts for a ten year old econobox were valuable

  • Y’all laugh but I spent a lot of years not gaming such that this is very recent. I grew up playing pong and Atari, then grew away. When I had kids, the Wii was perfect. Then my kids became teens and it wasn’t enough. Suddenly everything was Xbox, then pc gaming.

Suddenly if I wanted to interact with them I had to figure out this alien contraption with too many buttons and joysticks. After about five years (playing every 2-4 weeks because who has time), I’m ok technically. But there’s no way I can do fighting or any twitch moves, and I still sometimes blank on which button does what - it’s not engrained enough to just do it and I’ll never play frequently enough for that to become true

And Microsoft’s terminology doesn’t help - wtf do “bumper” and “trigger” mean? I still remember those buttons as “opposite of bottom”and “opposite of top”
