  • It does look like old youtube mix with some parts of newer youtube, I’ll give you that. To me, that’s what I like about it. It’s pretty much low-bullshit, but my eye is not for design.

Are there any well-populated instances you would recommend? I could be convinced to give it another try.

Unfortunately, I don’t browse through instance homepages anymore but through the GrayJay app, so my feed is a mix of videos from about 10 different video platforms and at least 3 peertube instances.

If you want to find instances, Join Peertube allows sorting by number of local videos and number of total videos. Dalek.zone, Makers.tube, and peertube.wtf seem like the most active or have the most users and the most videos.

  • I have given up on accessing youtube, peertube, odyssey, dailymotion, and whatever else in the browser. Now it’s exclusively GrayJay because I can’t be bothered to search for videos on different platforms, create accounts on multiple platforms, subscribe to creators on multiple platforms and then check each feed individually. GrayJay just united them all for me.

But I see your point. For being supposedly federated, I don’t get why peertube requires pasting links into the search bar. Why can’t I find them with, you know, the search? It’s baffling. They had to invent https://sepiasearch.org/ for searching across all instances it seems, but it still requires pasting the link into the searchbar of your instance.

  • Create an account on mbin and it’ll allow seeing most of the fediverse. It has a microblog view, a thread view and a combined view. It isn’t picky about which services to connect to. I’m subscribed to peertube channels, people on pixelfed, and browse the threadiverse. It works well.

Lemmy can’t see mastodon, mastodon seems to have trouble seeing lemmy but can see mbin and piefed, peertube just sees peertube (although comments on peertube can come from all over the fediverse), pixelfed just pixelfed, and so on.

Someone mentioned nomadic identities and federated identities and I would love either of those. But for now, I recommend mbin.

  • I think it’s hurting them that it says “join the beta”. To me, that means being put on a waitinglist and hoping to be picked. Better wording would’ve been “Join us (in beta)” or simply “join us”. Only now did I click on it and found out that I had to download a raw apk. Which brings me to the next point: it’s only on the iOS App Store. The majority of phone users on the planet (overwhelmingly so) are Android users. Why target the minority first? And why provide the majority with a link to a file that requires extra actions? It should be on the Google Store and on F-Droid first, then the App Store.

Anyway, I’m not the target audience, nor am I a programmer, so I’m grateful that somebody is putting in the work. Hopefully they can convince enough people to join and get off of closed-source platforms!
