Hey everyone!

I’m Nick (he/them), I’m 20 and I’m looking for Fediverse friends! I’m former military, and now I’m trying to get into college (Chemical Engineering). I’d love to make friends in STEM, but anyone is welcome!

If you wanna be friends, let me know!

If this is the wrong sub, sorry admins. Idk where to go :(

Sup Nick! Love the energy, and if you legit haven’t heard of our friend Nicole, this is hilarious in a good way.

Looks like you’re also a sh.it.head (don’t worry - this is a good thing!), and so far don’t look to be a shithead (which would be a bad thing) so in my book we’re already friends :) Welcome!

Anything you like to talk about (hobbies)?

I love to talk about (Free and Libre) Open Source Software, Homelabs, HEMA, LARP, Pen&Paper, Space and anything humanity.

Funny, I also happen to be former military (conscription of course) and currently in STEM. Just a bit older than you.

    Friends?

Post, Talk and communicate with people.

As you use the Fediverse you will slowly see regular people pop up, talk to them, especially those you’ve enjoyed talking to in the past or have something interesting to say to.

The Fediverse is about communication and sharing ideas so do that, This can be done through posting in communities or commenting on posts in communities / topics you are interested in.

This got me thinking. Is there any client app that lets you tag users? I know this used to be a function on reddit. I rarely read usernames so it would be really cool if I could tag someone and their username would have a little reminder on them so I could instantly see I talked to that person before.

It’s all good, yeah it’s a little different than your traditional social media as instead of going for reactions and pushing out content you actually need to communicate and talk instead of just pushing random posts more of the time to grow an actually connected audience

It’s not a bad way to get started, I’d suggest to find some communities you are interested in and begin to post content on them if they don’t get much content as it will show others that you are interested in that topic but also feed well for others looking for the content in the future.

In my country, military service is mandatory for all men when they turn 18, and then you serve for 1 year (up to 2). Hope that answers it :P

Welcome fellow cheese lover. If you’re from where I guess you’re from, we have a few communities for our big plus country.

Most of normal French speaking in on the jlailu instance, example the not very active !suisse@jlai.lu.

I think there are some English Switzerland communities and I don’t know about German, they are probably linked with the main German instance (like we are on jlailu with the rest of francophonie).

And as IRL, Italian speaking part does not exist 🤷🏻‍♂️

But you’ll find plenty of cool communities not related to a country or language. My favourite type are the ones where you can speak about whatever you want.

Also as a nice to know, you can blacklist keywords on several apps (and communities, peoples or instances), that way you can avoid the US politics spam around news communities.

It takes a little while to craft your perfect lemmy experience, but once done it’s a cool place!

You can probably start on mastodon were people have more casual conversations. You will probably find someone with your same interests. Enjoy your journey on the fediverse!

Oooh I did make a Mastodon account earlier, but I thought that wouldn’t matter too much because of federation. Did I get it wrong?

You got it right, you can interact with Lemmy from Mastodon and vice versa but it is limited to certain things.

Also not all instances are federated with each other which can be a nuisance to keep track of.

Heh, I’m an EE dropout kinda in machine learning stuff now. Good luck, chemical engineering seems tough (but cool).

But yeah, on Lemmy the idea is to post in communities that fit your niches, rather than trying to follow people directly like Mastadon, Twitter or whatever. Those are a bit slim but growing (for instance, there are some active science-focused communities/servers).
