Government lawyers argued that the release of Exum’s text messages would further sully the agent and his family. The judge pushed back. “I don’t know why the United States government has expressed zero concern for the sullying of Ms. Martinez’s reputation,” Alexakis said.

“I don’t know why the United States government has expressed zero concern for the sullying of Ms. Martinez’s reputation,” Alexakis said.

If the text messages for Ms. Martinez show deep remorse for the killing or immense anger with the system that put her in the position she needed to kill then I think that would reflect well on Ms. Martinez.

If instead it shows her making jokes about the victim or boasting about the killing then, yes, Ms. Martinez’s reputation will be further sullied.

So her lawyer is already telegraphing what the tone of her text messages are even before they are being released.
