A 23-year-old American was shot last March in South Padre Island. ICE’s involvement in the shooting was not disclosed until this week.
I have to wonder how many more murders ICE is covering up.
I often get downvoted into oblivion here pointing out the racial discrepancies regarding reactions to deaths caused by government officials but here we are. Your death doesn't mean as much if you're not white (especially if you're not a white woman). It took two white ppl dieing to make this situation serious and ignoring that is what caused the problem in the first place.I get where you’re coming from, but your argument is completely undermined by the fact that this murder wasn’t captured on video (in addition to only finding out about it 11 months later). The video really is everything. You might recall another person murdered by government officials on video by the name of George Floyd, a black man, whose murder made some pretty serious waves.
Yeah but we have Rodney King and the countless others. Police brutality doesnt mean much to when it happens to the minority
Do you not remember what happened after the the acquittal of the officers that brutally beat King? The LA riots happened. The video was what catalyzed so many to action even when the truth of police brutality was well known before that.
This is true of Eric Garner which was also caught on video and lead to large demonstrations.
And again with Philando Castile where the video showed Castile totally complying with officer orders, yet was still shot dead by that police officer. Again demonstrations against police brutality.
Its the video that makes people take notice. Sadly, it doesn’t sound like we have video of Ruben Ray Martinez final moments yet.
Rodney King being brutally assaulted by LAPD was also caught on film, and it also made huge waves nationwide. Two of those officers went to prison and Rodney King was awarded $4 million in damages
But how many other Black and Brown people have been murdered by cops with or without video and nothing happens? Too many to count is my guess.
Video doesn’t mean cops are charged. It just means there’s video that can mean nothing, and cops are ‘vindicated’ for murdering whomever they want.
No one’s claiming black and brown people aren’t disproportionately targeted by law enforcement. I’m saying the argument that “no one cares when it’s a brown person” is patently false, and that the government-sponsored murders that occur on video are the ones that elicit a strong reaction, regardless of skin color.
Eric Garner caused riots George Floyd cause riots Trevon Martin caused riots
Lots of folks die and there is a lot of reaction. What more do you want?
