As somebody told me the other day, they beat Hitler, they beat Napoleon.

In case any of you lurking Trump voters here need another example to ignore of how this person has no business in government and is too ignorant to be president. You are complicit in an impending tragedy to your history and the world.

This guy says he is the one who can stop World War III and people believe it. Embarrassing and terrifying, weird just doesn’t cut it.

As if this is what was needed to prove it. Trump once answered a question about the failings of western liberalism by talking about how liberal cities on the west coast were doing badly.

      LoL, yeah.

And they beat the Nazis with a looooot of help from the US, pooring equipment into the Soviet Union, and then drafted the hell out of their country and sacrificed millions.

The Napoleonic war was when soldiers muzzle loaded their guns and prrimarily armies travelled by foot or rode horses. And kept warm in the winter by normally not going out to fight wars.

They also very much had the advantage of knowing their terrain and both Hitler and Napoleon got cocky and kept going during winter time without being prepared for it. Hitler especially was actually making good progress until winter hit so you could almost even say that Russia took a calculated risk (even though I think it’s more of a “got lucky” situation).

Yeah people seem to think nuclear powers cannot lose wars. Afghanistan, Vietnam and several other countries would like to chime in.

Look nuclear escalation is a theoretical option, bit in practice it’s a lot harder than people think. And now with the recent sarmat test, war on Russian soil, the broad attacks on Russian infrastructure, gigantic losses and Russia relying on north Korea for production of artillery shells… Russia looks weaker than ever.

For two reasons in this case.

            1. Russia knows that the wind can blow radioactive ash across their border.

            2. Putin has grandchildren and dictators want legacies.

The other people in Putin’s administration also have their own families and interests and wouldn’t want that put at risk by nuclear annihilation. Even if Putin himself tried to give the go-ahead, I doubt those in charge of the nukes would want to effectively commit suicide over Putin’s stupid invasion by firing them.

I wonder what his response would be if someone told him Poland never surrendered to Hitler either, moved it’s government and attacked back and took back their home. Thereby Polands record against Hitler would be 1-0. It also would indicate they survived the Soviet Unions invasion of Poland as well.

The Soviets were complete jackasses to their allies. For example, they refused to allow American bombers to launch raids on Japan from eastern Russia, forcing the Allies to do a brutal island-hopping campaign to get them within range.

Then, when a few B-29s were too damaged to make the long flight back to the island and diverted to Russia, they confiscated the planes and imprisoned their crews until the end of the war.

Then, after the war, they dismantled two of the planes so they could figure out how to build a good airplane and claimed it as their own and called it the Tu-4.

Oh, and they also threw Andrei Tupolev into a gulag because he couldn’t meet Stalin’s insane demands.

Trump doesn’t know the difference between the Soviet Union and Russia.

Because that’s what Putin wants his minions to believe.

Ukraine were largely the force that defeated the Nazis on the east front in WWII - not Russia. Both were however part of the Soviet Union at the time.

Nah, Ukrainians served in disproportionately large numbers considering most of Ukraine was occupied by the Nazis, but ethnic Russians contributed roughly equivalent to their proportion of the Soviet Union.

Ethnic Russians were the largest proportion of the killed in action by quite a margin, let’s not pretend that they weren’t doing their part. Ukraine was too, of course - the people that pretend Ukraine just jumped ship and shacked up with the Nazis at the first opportunity are doing an unbelievable disservice to the millions of Ukrainians that died fighting the Nazis - but the huge population disparity between Russia and every other Soviet republic does show in the data.

      Ukraine needs ammo, not troops.

Human wave attacks (favoured by the Russians) are effective against opponents who have to ration their ammo, like arty rounds, due to scarcity.

If the defender has sufficient anno reserves, human wave attacks become very, very ineffective.

Quantity is a quality of its own. I’d say Ukraine is hanging on with advanced weaponry. It needs the mass to push Russian troop advances and repel their forces out of their country.

Anything else is keeping the status quo of roughly even wins and losses, which will never lead to victory in the next decade.

Russia claimed and held territory. Their military leadership doesn’t particularly value human lives in this conflict and hasn’t historically either. I have no doubt that they will continue the course suffering heavy human losses and eventually find some form of victory.

Ukraine needs more people if they want any hope of staving that eventuality off. The Russians have very different ideas of fighting a war of attrition.
